According to this: http://www.calcio.com/ultime_news.php?id=20617 the league has announced that August's Italian Supercoppa between Milan and Lazio is almost definitely going to be played outside of Italy once again, with Tripoli (Libya) the most likely location. The game was played there two seasons ago and in Giants Stadium last year. The other possibile locations are apparently Miami, Shanghai, or Toronto. The decision will be made within the next two weeks. The tentative date for the match is August 21.
thats too bad, I was hoping for the supercoppa to return to giants stadium...perhaps a road trip to toronto is in order for me if they play it up there.
It's a shame that the Italian's think so little of this tournament that the FIGC are forced to play the game outside the country. Personally if they have to play it anywhere i would like to see it played in Tripoli, nice to give somthing back to the africans seeing as we've been stealing all their players of them for the past decade or so.
I was at the last one at Giant's Stadium. It was hot as hell and the players did not look too happy playing in the heat. 'Miami should be cooler than Jersey though(nothing is "COOLER" than Jersey but you know what I mean)'. They did put out a good performance though (great second half forcing Buffon and Abbiati into making fantastic saves). It was not well advertised last year and still attracted 50+thousand last year. i can't imagine the same enthusiasm in Miami.
Hmm, Miami? I guess they are hoping that all the Brazilians will come out to watch Cafu, Kaka, Dida, and Serginho. But even if that happens I can't imagine they draw more than what was at Giants Stadium last year.
That is a good question...why not play it in Italy, like any other country. I can not believe there is that much apathy in Italia for it.
August in Italy = Vacation and that's that. It's why you will never see the Serie A season start earlier than the last week of August and why a fairly meaningless pre-season game will never draw much attention there.
I had done business with Italians. When they meant vacations, they meant vacations. They do not care if a single email sent in August will double their earning for the entire year. they are still on vacation.
I would like to see the game be played in Tripoli (beautiful city). But i think many fans in the US will enjoy seeing that in Miami. _________________ GianPaolo
At the Lega Calcio meeting today it was announced that theSupercup will be played in Tripoli August 21st.
And today it was announced that this game will now be played in Milan, due to unspecified "organizational obstacles" with holding the game in Tripoli.
WTF? I like Milan (the city - and sort of the team) but when one of the sides is........Milan, why would you play the game there? Weird.
The SuperCoppa was usually staged in one of the home clubs stadium. So it's not unsual. The reason is simply that they want to get people to the stadium. Nobody really cares about it in Italy. And there are far more Milan fans in Milan than Lazio fans in Rome so the decision to play it in Milan is for purely financial reasons.
I don't recall this being true, but this article indicates they typically used to play it at the home stadium of the league champion: http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-italylibya&prov=reuters&type=lgns
They never have before, so I'm not holding my breath although, for some reason, their schedule for that day is not up yet. Their schedule is generally updated each Friday for the next week Sunday thru Saturday, but the link to Saturday is broken: http://www.international.rai.it/aree/nordamerica/index.shtml
