I'm happy that Maniche got called. He had to be on the team. I would've switched Quim with Baia and Beto with Fernando Meira though. Meira had an awesome season and Beto didn't do much. Same thing with Helder Postiga, they should have kept Boa Morte because we have limited options on the left and he could play forward as well. Now, all we can do is support the team.

Moreira my starter the next two games for Portugal, could be the starting goalkeeper

I'm also surprise how can Beto be over Meira, and Postiga over Boa Morte, just don't make any sense to me

    Hi Frank

Did Scolori say that Moriera will have the same chance as Ricardo and Quimm. If that is the case i think that when Portugal plays Greece Moreira will be in Goal.

Here is my Ideal Starting Lineup.

    Goal = Moriera

    Right Defence = Paulo Ferriera

    Central Defence = Jorge Andrate

    Central Defence = Ricardo Carvelho

    Left Defence = Nuno Valente

    Defense Midfield = Maniche

    Defense Midfield = Costinha

    Left Wing = Cristiano Ronoldo

    Center Midfield = Rui Costa

    Right Wing = Luis Figo

    Striker = Pauleta

I think Scolori did a good Job picking the Final 23. My only thought"s are he should have gone with Fernando Meira over Beto. I agree with Postiga over Boa Morte only because we need some offence. Remember Postiga never got a chance to play in Tottenham after the got Jermaine from West Ham. Postiga was scoring alot of goals for the reserves. Plus Boa Morte plays left wing and We have Sabrosa and Ronoldo. Ronoldo can play right wing but no one will have the guts to take a healthy Figo off the field Figo plays all 90 mins. I wonder if Scolori will have the guts to tell Figo that Sabrosa or Pauleta should take the penelties. Moriera in goal is a no Brainer.

For Scolari to call Moreira, it means he is not certain which goalie he will use (seems like he has lost confidence in Ricardo). I wouldn't be suprised if Moreira is the starting goalie for Euro 2004. I am suprised that Luis Boa Morte was left off, but I agree with the desicion to bring another midfielder (Maniche). I also agree with Frank, Fernando Meira is much better than Beto, plus he could of been used as a central defender or defensive midfielder (of course if F.Meira was selected, Maniche may of been left off and Luis Boa Morte may of made the team). Overall, I think Scolari did a good job selecting the players. I don't think anyone can complain.

Here's who I think Scolari will use as his starting 11 for Euro 2004:

    GK - Moreira
    RD - P.Ferreira
    CD - F.Couto
    CD - J.Andrade
    LD - Rui Jorge
    DM - Petit
    DM - Costinha
    RM - Figo
    CM - Rui Costa
    LM - Simao
    FD - Pauleta

Here's the team that I would start for Euro 2004:

    GK - Moreira
    RD - P.Ferreira
    CD - J.Andrade
    CD - R.Carvalho
    LD - Rui Jorge
    DM - Petit
    DM - Costinha
    RM - Figo
    CM - Rui Costa
    LM - Simao
    FD - Nuno Gomes

I am very happy w/ the team , Moriera is a welcome addition...I am very , very , very , very , very about his this. The only problem that I have is this...... a weak striker depth!! Postiga did not get ample playing time this season whereas Boa Morta was having a career year!!!!! he is very versatile...play him on the left or up top...brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I would also have picked Boa Morte and Meira, left Postiga and Beto off the team. Here would be my team (sorry if anyone has this team already):

    --------------------Moreira----------------------

    P. Ferreira----Carvalho----Andrade----Nuno Valente

    -------------Petit--------Costinha----------------

    ------------------Rui Costa-----------------------

    ---Figo--------------------------------Simao-----

    -------------------Pauleta------------------------

I'd keep Rui Costa on a short leash though. If he doesn't perform early, I wouldn't hesitate to use Deco.

Beto was called because not only does he play in the middle and right side of the defense, he can also play defensive mid.
Postiga was picked because he is more of a true striker while Boa Morte is a wing player.

Good squad though they should be able to go far.

How could he not have Boa Morte on the team? He's having a career year 2 Fulham. He's probably their best player. Every time he played for the Nat'l teeam, he played well. He should be in & Postiga should have been left out. He has hardly played this year, he was hurt and we don't need a 3rd striker that would never get any playing time in the tourney any way.
Boa Morte is one of the hardest workers on the team, along with Costinha. The guy never gives up on a ball and he's scrappy. He's fast and is a much more important cog than Postiga. Give Postiga a couple of years, he's not there yet...

I also wouldn't play both Petit and Costinha together

    Here's my team:

    Any Keeper
    Ferreira Andrade Couto Rui Jorge/Valente
    Costinha
    Rui Costa Deco
    Figo Simao
    Pauleta

    I would go with this:

    ----------------------Moreira----------------------

    P. Ferreira----Carvalho----Andrade----Nuno Valente

    -------------Maniche--------Costinha----------------

    ----------------------Deco-----------------------

    ---Figo--------------------------------Simao-----

    ---------------------Pauleta------------------------

    p.s. I know there's a lot of Porto players but I assure you I'm not a Porto fan ;)

I think this was a good selection although I did expect to see Boa Morte on the team. As for keepers I'm dissapointed that all I hear is Moreira. I think Ricardo is probably going to start, but I'm suprised nobody is talking about Quim. Are people forgeting how good a keeper this guy can be? He has shown some real brilliance on the national level the last couple of years.

As for Moreira he is a very bright talented young goalie and you can definitley say he is the keeper of the future. Now put your favorite club aside for a second throw Sporting, Benfica, etc out the window. How many of you feel completly comfortable with him in net against the very best in Europe. The Owens, Beckhams, Henry's etc. Don't forget how young this kid is. This is not the superliga this is Euro 04. I believe he was picked because he earned it and this is a good experience for him but I would be very nervous........My pickwould be Quim, or Ricardo just because they have played against some of the players I've named above.

I would feel comfortable with Moreira as the starting goalie. He had a great season, not just in the SuperLiga, but in the UEFA Cup.

I'm in a bit of dilemma concerning the Portugal squad. I think they have an excellent chance in Euro2004 and will at least get to the semis, maybe further. I'm wandering about Scolari's probable starting line up for the tournament. Its the left back role that I'm worried about. Who has been starting there recently - Rui Jorge or Nuno Valente?

Also there are so many attacking midfield options, will Deco only be a sub.
Anyone know the recent starting 11 for Portugal?

In the last friendly against Sweden, all of the Porto players were exept from playing including Valente due to their Champions League preparations against Deportivo, so Rui Jorge got the nod that game....Only Scolari knows, but my money would be on Valente over Jorge...

Deco was instrumental in the win against Deportivo...he is the magician and Scolari would be a fool to keep him on the bench..

How about starting Ronaldo???...don't think anyone has considered him as a starter...he was playing awsesome with Man U...I would love to see him in the starting lineup on the wing...what u guys think?

I'm a little suprised that Simao wasn't given #20, but I guess they want to keep the starting lineup between 1-11.
