I think he's getting a bad rap from Tottenham. He lost one of the ten or so best players in the world and replaced them at the last moment, trying to get them to play in his style. It was doomed from the start this season. When Townsend went on his little run in the early season it disguised it, but the team has played poor. Soldado doesn't finish, Lennon isn't an AVB winger (hulk, bale). He'll bounce back. Maybe Benfica will give him a shot?
