    Lisbon hotels

I was looking at the end of Nov 03 for accommodation and everythign was pretty much full.

The places that were available were pretty expensive - 120 euro + per night.

I eventually got booked up in a place called Peniche which is on the west coast about 80Km from lisbon

    Here's an advice..

Portugal is not big country.. You don't need all to stay in Lisbon.. No mather where you stay you will be near everything.. From north to south there's something like 800km.. 5 or 6 hours by car or less then an hour by plane...

And an extra advice.. you can come to Oporto my city there you will be at less then 40 minutes by car from 5 stadiums..

You'll find cheaper places outside the big cities specially Lisbon.. Of course if you want to spend some days at the beach in the Algarve it's difficult to find cheaper places..

But you can always do camping...

    Enjoy..

    Jon, some advice please.

I am staying in Peniche, do you know what the trains are like from this area to lisbon and Porto?

Also, if you know Peniche at all, can you tell me anything about the place as this is where I will be based for 12 days during the group games.

    Thanks

First let me tell you that you are staying in a very beautiful place near the beach the berlengas (desert islands)..

There's an old trains railway which connects you to Lisbon and Leiria nearby.. But it is not a main line..

If you wanna find out more about trains go to:
    http://www.cp.pt/servicos/p_mapa.html#

    And about peniche:
    http://www.cm-peniche.pt/Geografia/geografia.htm

There's a highway passing nearby also. You can chose to travel by bus till the nearest station or do whole traject by bus.. It depends on where you're going..

Thanks very much for that. It looked a pretty nice place when I booked it, and all for 39 euro per nite too, which was a lot cheaper than the hotels in Lisbon!!

I will be travelling to Lisobon for the england games, Coimbra for the Eng. v Swi game and to Porto for the Italy v Sweden game. So I guess that bus or train will be an option for travelling.

    Thanks again....

    Joni,

Thanks for the info. I am planning on staying in Porto. I had heard such good things about it, I applied for tickets up there and ignored Lisbon. I have many tickets and a few friends will be joining me.

Unfortunately, I am having a hard time finding lodging. Ideally, I would love an apartment that houses 4-6. Everyting I find on-line is far from Porto. I want to be in the city so I can experience it.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Any hotels anyone can suggest

Hi, I'm from Australia and have tickets to matches in Porto & Guimares. I am really strugling to find any hotels, and the official agency UEFA hasn't responded to me as of yet (aprox 2 weeks - I called them but they said that they only correspond via email or fax and that it can take a while before they respond).

If anyone can suggest any available hotel anywhere in the region, even an hour or so around porto, I would be very very much appreciative.

    Thank you so much.

I was fortunately able to force my way into a Holiday Inn in Lisbon for ten nights, using points from their rewards program. Initially the hotel did not list any rewards nights for the period of the tournament, but I was able to get in touch with the right person at their guest relations department and emphasize that their program bills itself for having no black-out dates and they were able to force the hotel to release its standard 5% of their rooms for reward stays.

Otherwise, it looks like just about every chain has their rooms pulled from standard booking practices and the Euro 2004 Accomodations Agency is handling the inventories (at a jacked-up rate).

Before I was able to get my reservation, I looked into staying in a hospice and there seem to be some fairly decent ones in and around Lisbon (the only place I looked, as I'm only going to games in Lisbon's two stadiums).

You see I wouldn't mind paying extra to the accomodation agency. Its only 6 nights between 3 of us. And in the scheme of things its not much considering air fares from Australia etc. But they don't respond to emails! I called them and they say its a 2 week wait to reply to an email.

Its 2 weeks and 1 day now.. Ah well I suppose patience is a virtue.

    Dear All

We have just bought an old house in the village of Pinhal, 5 minutes walk from the Obidos main gates. Old town with lots of restaurants and bars.

We are having the bathrooms re-modeled and a dining area added, work begins next week and should be finished by first week of May or before.

Therefore we will have available a small house with 3 double bedrooms (two double beds, two single beds), 2 bathrooms, Kitchen / living room, dining room and terrace., during Euro 2004.

The house is 45 minutes drive down the A8 to Lisbon Airport. There is a slow train to Lisbon and faster coaches run frequently. But a car is pretty essential if you want to travel anywhere in Portugal. Local buses and trains are slow and infrequent

Price is 1,500 a week for the house. If anyone is interested please e-mail megapesca@mail.telepac.pt

I hope you all enjoy Portugal, its a great place, good wine, good food and provided you are not in Lisbon or Porto (big city prices) good value for money.

    Cheers

    Rowena
