Portugal vs Hungary (1926) Portugal 3 Hungary 3 (Friendly) (1933) Portugal 1 Hungary 0 (Friendly) (1938) Portugal 4 Hungary 0 (Friendly) (1956) Portugal 2 Hungary 2 (Friendly) (1966) Hungary 1 Portugal 3 (FIFA WC) (1983) Portugal 0 Hungary 0 (Friendly) (1998) Hungary 1 Portugal 3 (UEFA Q) (1999) Portugal 3 Hungary o (Friendly) (2009) Hungary 0 Portugal 1 (FIFA WCQ) (2009) Portugal 3 Hungary 0 (FIFA WCQ)
Qualification Scenarios: If Portugal loses they are out. If Portugal win they go through as group leaders as long as Iceland do not win. If Portugal and Iceland win both go through it goes down to goal difference and so on... If Iceland draws against Austria 0-0 then we need to draw 2-2 against Hungary to go through a group runners up and so on ( Iceland 1 Austria 1 means Portugal need a 3-3 draw). If Iceland draw 0-0 with Austria and we draw against Hungary 1-1 then it will go to Fair Play i.e. how many cards, right now Iceland has 3 yellows and Portugal 2 yellows which means at the moment Portugal go through in second place. If we lose out to Iceland (both 3 points) for second place we can still go through as one of the 4 best 3rd placed teams but then we will meet the winner of group D which will be either Spain or Croatia. We play on the last day (17:00) with only Group E (Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland) playing after us (20:00) by which time we would have a better idea about other 3rd placed sides i.e. 3rd placed qualification. W7 D3 L0 We even drew against them 2-2 in 1956 which was the time Hungary had its best ever side and one of the best ever according to experts, Puskás Hungary.
The last time we drew the first two games in a major competition was at Euro 1984 also in France. In our first game we drew 0-0 with West Germany. In our second game we drew 1-1 with Spain with Sousa scoring for us. In our third game needing a win we beat Romania 1-0 with a goal from the great Nené in the 81st minute. In the next game against France in the semi final (only 8 teams in the final) we were 1-1 at the end of normal time with a goal from Jordão who also put us 2-1 ahead in extra time ('98) before Domergue '114 equalised and Plantini scored a winner just before penalties in the 119 minute. We just need another 1-0 to basically repeat 1984!
Go ahead and win the group . Belgium will be waiting for you. Good luck [emoji3] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well it will probably be Italy, Spain, Croatia or Belgium if we go through. So there is no easy side in the last 16 for us. Whereas if Italy wins the group they would face Iceland, Hungary or Portugal so for Italy it would better if Portugal wins the group. So maybe Italy will be hoping for a bit of luck to make it easier.
Italy has already won their group. Won't be facing Portugal next round like most predicted. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes you are right Italy have already won the group but we only need to finish second for the Italy vs Portugal game to happen which is possible with two draws and some other factors going our way as I posted above. Since we have a bad record against Italy I would rather face Belgium (probably). What team out of Portugal, Iceland or Hungary do you fancy the most? Or am I missing something as I see the Italian forum is talking about facing Spain or Croatia? Will have a look tomorrow, looks like I made a mistake.
All the big teams are wishing that Portugal get eliminated. They can be dangerous. They remind me of Italy 1982 World Cup team.
No. The runner up in F plays the runner up in B. It's messed up because they are going from 24 to 16 teams. In some cases it's better to finish 2nd or 3rd [emoji3] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just checked you are right If Portugal finish second they play the second placed team in Group B (England, Wales, Slovakia or Russia). If we finish first we play the second in Italy's group (Belgium?) if we finish third and qualify we play either Group C winner probably Germany or Group D winner probably Spain. Hopefully I have got this right but don't know how, if you finish third it is decided which of the the group winners you play as for each third placed side qualifying there are two possibilities.
Parking the bus didn't stop Portugal offense. It was the lack of quality finishing and excellent goaltending. Maybe I'm wrong but didn't Portugal have 14 shots on target today and that's not counting the two post.
Will Hungary's 41 year old goalkeeper have the game of his life against us? He looks like my garbage man.
I like the Hungary's keeper lack of self consciousness in his attire but what is much more important is that he has looked very poor with his feet, decision making and coming out for crosses which hopefully will compensate for our bad finishing.
The Hungarians looked ok against Austria their first game and took away the Austrians dark horse label but after the way we played against Austria the only difference is we didn't put the ball in the netbut we completely outplayed Iceland and Austria. Yesterday the Hungarians were absolutely lucky to get the point against Iceland.
Hungary wasn't lucky to get the point. They kept trying and their give and go passing for the tie was pretty awesome. They don't look very strong but they can break us down for a goal and we have have another off day, we won't win the game. I also guarantee that their goalie will probably have the game of his life like all goalies do against Portugal.
Both the Austrian and Iceland goalkeepers got MOTM cards on FIFA I know it's just a game but it goes to show you how an average goalkeeper intend to have stellar games against us I recall the Albanian goalkeeper playing a great game in the groups Then we play goalkeepers of high quality and make them look average Sigh
These goalies get all pumped up for these games. Very intensive concentration. If they don't have the game of their lives, their team will get crushed.
