It's been confirmed we will be playing Greece on the 26th of next month, this is the match that alot of geez have been waiting for. Our boys should be fired up no matter who is in the line-up but what I'm worried about is Scolari's tactical approach (there's a wonder) let's see if he learned anything.discuss.Forca Portugal.

EDIT: Fixed the pics, found the venue.

Scolari's tactical decisions will be very interesting to see. I am half and half on this game. I would have preferred Mexico.

You only get a star for World Cup victories.

Why is that? IMO we should be playing european opposition since were preparing for a european cup.

I'm pretty excited for this game, will he call up Fernandes/Veloso/Miguel? even Moutinho? Fernandes and Moutinho have been looking good lately, not to impressed by Veloso but I would still try him out for this game. Also I would start Jorge Ribeiro, I want to see him play for another full 90 minutes, he wasn't impressive in his debut but looked pretty good against Italy.

Greece is a good game for us tactically, they are strong defensively and counterattack and these are the types of teams that we have more difficulty against.

the bad part is, because of the whole euro 2004 thing. if we lose again to Greece it will be a demoralizing loss for the team.

better game then mexico for sure. Greece> Mexico.

The good thing about this friendly is that provides a moral boost in case we win...if we don't, it's going to be exactly the opposite. This is a good thing, adds pressure to the players to do well.

This game is a no win situation for Portugal...

If Portugal loses, then here we go again..

If Portugal wins, it becomes...Greece beat them when it mattered...

It doesn't make sense to play this opponent before the tournament.

They could have played England (Since they aren't doing anything:rolleyes:) at Wembley which would have done more for us.

Don't know about that. If Portugal wins, it may very well provide satisfaction and the avenge the team had been looking for, and could very well make the team become more of a "team".

Considering the opponent, Portugal SHOULD not implement the common formation where we stack the midfield with 5 players. Yes we end up getting all the possession, but as we had seen against Greece twice, as well as Italy...they counter, and Greece is good at it...although they are no where as talented at finishing as the Italians.

    I propose a 4-4-2

    Bosingwa --- Carvalho --- Pepe --- Ferreira
    ----------------- Veloso -----------------
    ------------------------- Deco -----------
    Ronaldo ------------------------ Quaresma
    ---------- Makukula ----- Nani ------------

P.S: I got Nani playing in the whole, linking the play with Maku and the medios. I was thinking of putting Ronaldo there, but I still rather him on the wing.

Joelz...Greece beat Portugal in the EURO Final in Lisbon...we could beat them in 10 friendlies...it wouldn't make up for that one game.

We could beat them in the WC Final and it still wouldn't make up for losing to them at home in a Tournament Final at home, which may never happen again. (Unless of course WC2018 is in Portugal;))

Oh of course it would not make up for that one game, but it would make a difference. I have played in enough sports in my lifetime to know this. If they were to beat Greece, it would very well be worth something. More then these other friendlies.

That's weird Nani is much better on the wing and Ronaldo is much better in the whole.

we need to learn how to beat strong defensive teams. Had we beat Italy then this game would of been a bit of a waste but they shut us down for the most part and we need to see if we have learned something.

By no means should we beat Greece will I be happy at all. Only a Tournament win could ever be considered revenge, that or eliminating them in qualification for something.

But as far as friendlies go this makes the most sense for us.

I agree, but I just find Ronaldo is so much more influential on a game then on the wing. I still sort of believe he becomes isolated upfront. So if anyone would become isolated it would be Nani...

But you are correct though, Ronaldo is better in the hole.

P.S: Thanks for the aid on the picture.

I hope We play something like that 4-4-2, but I doubt it. Deco needs to be really on his game to play alone out there with Veloso. Veloso and Maniche or Manelele I'd like to see though.

Deco has been playing more of a defensive role with Barcelona for sometime now. Thats why I put him there, but I wouldn't mind seeing Manuel Fernandes or Maniche there.

He's always played a bit deeper with Barca but the whole 3 man midfield fights. So Deco is in there with Xavi/Iniesta and Toure/Marquez. But with that formatioin it will be just him and Veloso fighting in the middle he would really have to be on his game and motivated, something I haven't seen in him for a while.

You're looking at it from a fan's point of view for sure.

For the main part, whatever happens from the game, there will either be a moral boost at the end, or a determinant factor for the boys to get their act together.

maybe Portugal will play greece in the final of euro

Not only is Ronaldo more effective in the hole compared to Nani, but I think Nani would be more effective on the wing compared to Ronaldo. Nani has no problem getting chalk on his boots huging the sideline and streching the defence. Aswell he is a great crosser of the ball and it would be great to have Ronaldo playing through the middle to get on the end of those crosses. Plus Nani will provide much more defensive cover on the wing when Bosingwa bombs forward and will help break up any potential counter attacks. Man, when I look at how much Nani has to offer, its hard to see him sit on the bench and I feel he brings much more to the team then Quaresma does. But if we can find a effective formation to incorporate all of Ronaldo, Nani and Quaresma that would be ideal, and why I like the formation Joelzinho posted.

    Bosingwa --- Carvalho --- Pepe --- Ferreira

    --------------------- Ronaldo -------------
    Nani ---------------------------- Quaresma
    --------- Makukula -----Almeida------------

Perhaps an experimental lineup to use against Greece!?

We would be raped on counter attacks.
