    Braga's UEFA Cup Group

Braga was put in Pot 5 (out of five) for its draw, which is a tough position to be in. But the draw seems reasonable:

    Sevilla CF (Spain)
    AZ Alkmaar (Holland)
    Slovan Liberec (Czech)
    Grasshoppers (Suisse)
    Braga (Portugal)

here are the latest standings after Tuesday's Champions League games. Even though Benfica lost and Porto won we are closer to 5th place than we are of 7th because Porto beat a German team and Steua Bucharest (a Romanian team) lost:

The overall situation in Europe is looking rather dour:

Ranking UEFA: Portugal continua a perder terreno

    1º Espanha 15.500 - 14.312 - 12.437 - 15.642 - 5.857 - 63.748 - 7/7
    2º Itália 15.928 - 8.875 - 14.000 - 15.357 - 5.785 - 59.945 - 6/7
    3º Inglaterra 10.666 - 11.250 - 15.571 - 14.428 - 6.875 - 58.790 - 7/8
    4º França 7.916 - 13.500 - 11.428 - 10.812 - 4.875 - 48.531 - 7/8
    5º Alemanha 9.142 - 4.714 - 10.571 - 10.437 - 4.357 - 39.221 - 5/7
    6º Portugal 10.750 - 10.250 - 8.166 - 5.500 - 3.416 - 38.082 - 4/6
    7º Roménia 2.166 - 4.333 - 5.500 - 16.833 - 8.000 - 36.832 - 3/3
    8º Holanda 6.166 - 5.416 - 12.000 - 7.583 - 3.928 - 35.093 - 5/7

Thanks for adding the updated stats on Portugal following this very forgettable week. To recap what's already been said:

--Three weak losses and one big win make for a fairly meager +.333 (2/6)
--True that Porto beating a German team helped, but SCP lost to one so that's sort of a wash
--I'm thinking that our best shot of respectability might come from getting all three of our CL teams into the Uefa Cup. I honestly don't see them going very far in the main competition, but any of them could do some damage in the lesser one. And you get equal points for wins in each (though more bonus point opportunities for CL play).

One point for SCP away to Bayern Munich yesterday. A good result but just makes me more irritated at their home loss in the previous game.

Today both Porto and Benfica have winnable games. Porto at Hamburg, and Celtic at Benfica. Three points for each team would help not only in UEFA Ranking terms but would also go a long way to consolidating a spot in the UEFA Cup for each team--which I really do think will be the only chance for any of these sides to do some real damage in Europe.

Genius first half for both sides: Hamburg 0-1 Porto; Benfica 2-0 Celtic. This could be a great day for our cause in Europe if the results hold. Way too early to tell though.

Sweet. They did hold, making for a huge day for Portuguese teams.

    Benfica 3-0 Celtic
    Hamburg 1-3 Porto

That's 4/6 or .666 points to add to our overall total. It bumps us up to a tie for eleventh with Ukraine, and also gives us a boost relative to Germany. Plus, this solidifies each team's claim to a UC spot even if they don't qualify, so that could benefit the coefficient in the long run. Here's how they stack up at the moment:

    5 Germany 39.649
    6 Portugal 38.916
    7 Romania 36.832

The only downside to the results was FCK's win over Man United. That one means that Benfica is tied with them for the final spot in their group on four points. The game against FCK in Lisbon will be huge there.

SCP looks good at this stage, only a point behind Inter and done with group leader bayern. if they can beat Spartak (@ Lisbon) and tie Inter, then they'll go through with an inter draw or loss against Bayern.

Porto's group is a dead heat. For one thing, they've clinched a spot in the UC at a minimum, which is good. Thereafter, it's CSKA leading (!) with 8, and both Arse and Porto on 7 points. The question will be can Porto get a result against CSKA in Moscow. Tough task but they've done it before. They're at a disadvantage because they're done with the group weakling while the other two teams have a shot to get an easy three points.

Final point: if Braga can beat Liberec at home (not an unreasonable hope) then they can salvage a rotten start to their campaign and add more points. That would make for a fantastic week for Portuguese teams. We'll see.

The biggest worry is that when the 2002/03 points are dropped, Portugal will tumble down to as low as 9th spot unless Sporting, Porto, Benfica and Braga continue to play into 2007. We need to make sure that these teams are either continuing in the CL or, in the case of the Big 3, at least secure a 3rd spot in their group so that they can get into the UEFA Cup last 32. Hopefully we will see 4 teams in Europe this coming March...

If SCP could have snuck it out against Bayern Portugal could get closer to leapfrogging Germany.

    after todays results

    Code:
    1 Spain 15.500 14.312 12.437 15.642 7.285 65.176

Don't get all excited after every group game, the bottom line is that we need to finish this year with a coefficient that is higher by .392 over Germany and 8.584 over Romania in order to stay above them and right now we are trailing Germany by .107 and trailing Romania by 4.088 - Not Good.

I think these rankings are ridiculous. They have to adjust the way they count points accumulated in the UEFA Cup. To think that a country like Romania will move up in the rankings because they dominate the European minnows cup is absurd. Can you name one team from Romania? I can't. And, now we'll have more of them in the Champions League because they rule the minnows? Come on.

Both Steau and Rapid had decent runs in the UEFA Cup last season, and because both are considered in the lower tier of the UEFA co-efficient, every win and tie that they get are magnified by a certain amount more, so that puts countries like Portugal, Holland, Greece and Scotland behind the 8-ball...

Well the ranking is pretty fair, the thing is Romania has 3 teams, who happen to be decent teams capable of making points, something that didn´t happened in recent years.
What will happen is that they will get 4 teams in Europe and in 2 years 6 including 3 in CL making them fall again to their deserved place simply because all points colected won´t be enough to sustain 6 teams.
Basically its a cyclical process for every nation outside the big 5.

You say that romanian football is crap ... ok i must agree that it's not in the top. At least it wasn't anywhere close after the fall of communism in 1989.
Still, Steaua Bucharest won the Champions Cup in 1986, reached the semi-final in 18987 and the final again in 1989. Steaua was the best team in europe in that period. Also Dinamo played a european cup semi-final in 1990. After that the romanian football collapsed into chaos. Only in the recent years investors actually started to think and keep the best players home.
2 years ago we had only Steaua in the groups stage in UEFA Cup. Last year we had all 3 teams in the groups stage, and Steaua and Rapid played in the quarter finals together and Steaua won and played the semi-finals. We would've qualified into the final if we wouldn't have received a goal in the 89'th minute ... This year we had Steaua in the Champions League Groups (1st time in 10 years) and Rapid and Dinamo in the Uefa Groups stage. Steaua took 3rd place in Cl and qualified for UEFA 1/16. Dinamo qualified also. Rapid with a win at Athens will also qualify. Both Dinamo and Rapid are unbeaten till now. I say this is an important improvement.
Not mentioning that CFR Cluj reached the intertoto cup final when 3 years ago they were playing in Romania's 3rd division.
Also, we had some very nice scores lately. We've beaten the german teams every chance we've got.
Steaua, Rapid and Dinamo passed Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Hertha, Hamburg in the last 2 seasons. There were some other german teams also, but i can't remember them now ...

We won't stay close to top5 for more than a few years, since other teams with no european experience will have to play in UEFA, and i doubt they'll get many points, but we won't fall to 25th place either, where Romania was 3 years ago. The chaos period is over ... a top 10 ranking would be fair for Romania...

    Yours,
    Fallen

Not decent enough as you didn't get a name right. It's Steaua, not Steau. ;)

Not true. A Romanian team gets the same amount of points for a win or a draw as a Portuguese team. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw (or halfed if the game took place in the qualifying rounds). The thing is the total is divided by the number of teams (3 for Romania, 6 for Portugal, 7 for Germany).

As FallenRo said - we will slowly go down starting with next season, when we'll have 4 teams.

Yeah, but hopefully we'll stop to 9th-10th place ...
Anyway, the coefficient we've gathered in the last 2 seasons (including this one) will keep us in top10 for at least 4 more years...

In the last 2-3 years, following Steaua's model, many rich people started investing into teams outside Bucharest. If 4-5 years ago Steaua, Dinamo and Rapid had pretty good financial situations for our level, the teams outside Bucharest were in a really bad shape. But in the last few years many investors started pumping money into teams outside Bucharest. Poli Timisoara and CFR Cluj are just 2 of the examples. Their budgets are comparable to the budgets from the Bucharest teams. Just the mentality is different. Playing at Steaua/Dinamo/Rapid means that you MUST have results and try to win the title. The new financial power of other teams is trying to also create a different mentality for the players there ... the mentality that they CAN play for the title and for big results in Europe. CFR Cluj managed to do just that as they're involved in the title battle. Poli Timisoara is ranked lower in the national league, but they're gaining up. This can only be good for our league, which is getting stronger and stronger. I wonder what CFR Cluj and Poli Timisoara will do in the UEFA Cup ... when they'll play there.

The biggest change in romanian football in the last few years was the mentality. The mentality that we can do it, that we should fear no one.

Sorry for invading your thread with Romanian stuff but i find the thread very interesting and i think that some information about romanian clubs would be useful for you ...

Yeah Romanian clubs have improved in recent years, but IMHO they havent surpasssed the Portuguese clubs but in the rankings we will probably fall behind. but Im sure in a few years we will come back up.

Its not too a big deal anyways, like you guys said its all cyclical if your not Spain Italy or England who always stay at the top.
