So far, the 2 strikers indicated in this thread (Vaz Te and Derlei) are not on the NT. Vaz Te is too young at this point for 'AA' duty and Derlei, well, I just can't see another Portuguese via Brazil player on the NT at this time...
I agree 100%. We're not that desperate for a striker + his form has dropped. Scoring in Russia dosen't impress me to much I mean in Portugals last two meetings vs Russia we've outscored them 9-1.
Hugo Almeida's make or break year is this year if he wants a chance at 2002. I think he can be our 'Jan Koller' where he will draw defenders towards him allowing space for either Postiga or Nuno Gomes or even Cristiano Ronaldo should Scolari go with just one striker...think about it, how much success did Milan Baros have with a big man next to him in EURO 2004? now how much success does he have with Liverpool with only elusive strikers like Morientes and Cisse to call on? I think Postiga or Nuno Gomes can use a luxury like Hugo Almeida.
I was for Derlei about 3 years ago...but certainly not now. If we were ever to naturalize a quality Brazilian striker it should have been Jardel...sadly that boat has sailed a long time ago. Portuguese football should focus on developing strikers as midfielders will develop themselves considering our talent usually has plenty of midfield flair.
Derlei won't make it into the squad unless Moutinho is called to replace Deco. I honestly think one Brazilian born is enough if not too much as it is.
Derlei is Portuguese? I don't think you can become Portuguese until you call up the Brazilian NT coach and ask him he's going to call you up anytime soon. When he says he has no room for you then you can sign the papers and become Portuguese.
