Portugal blast for United's Ronaldo April 28, 2004 LISBON (AFP) - Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has threatened to discard Cristiano Ronaldo for Euro 2004 after the Manchester United winger pulled out of training for the friendly against Sweden. "Cristiano Ronaldo is an unknown for me. I've seen him play more for Manchester United than here," the 2002 Brazil World Cup coach said. Ronaldo pulled out of training with a thigh strain. "I want players who are as keen to play for their country as their club," Scolari said. "If you can play with a knock for your club, you can do it for your country." The sentiment will probably not endear him to United manager Alex Ferguson. Scolari said he already had 26 names in his head for a squad of 23 he will announce in mid-May.

Portugal aim to reach semi-finals says coach Scolari May 12, 2004 LISBON (AFP) - Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said their aim was to at least reach the semi-finals of the European championships, which will be held on Portuguese soil from June 12 to July 4. Scolari, who led Brazil to the 2002 World Cup title, told the Diario de Noticias newspaper: "The minimum result I am looking for is that we finish among the top four teams. "If we reached the semi-finals I would be reasonably happy. To win against Greece (in the opening match) is vital," he added Wednesday. Scolari said he was unhappy with the fixture lists just before the tournament. "I am critical of UEFA and FIFA fixture lists," he said, adding he wouldn't have enough time to train with a full squad because of Porto's Champions League final against Monaco on May 26 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. "The only team which will not be able to train normally from May 22-23 will be Portugal. You need more than two weeks to prepare for a competition like Euro 2004." http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_ylc=X3oD...v=afp&type=lgns
Scolari hints at exit from Portugal after Euro 2004 May 13, 2004 LISBON (AFP) - Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari hinted he may leave his post once his contract expires in July, after the three-week European football finals which the country will host. "After, it is another life. I don't know what will happen," he said in an interview with Portuguese state radio RDP. "But since at this moment I notice that winning Euro 2004 makes it difficult for me to stay on and losing also makes it difficult, I will have to think about my future," he added. "If I get some offer from someone, I will have to examine it. I was not thinking this way before." The president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Gilberto Madail, said in an interview published last month in weekly newspaper O Independente that it would be difficult to keep Scolari if he leads Portugal to Euro 2004 glory. "If a coach is successful it is difficult to keep them in the role. Because the proposals which they normally receive from football clubs are much bigger than those from a national federation," he said. Scolari took the helm of the Portuguese national team in January 2003 shortly after he led his native Brazil to a record fifth world title in Japan, winning all seven World Cup matches in the process. He is reportedly being paid a 150,000 dollar (126,000 euro) monthly salary as Portugal coach. Portuguese media have reported recently that Scolari may take over coaching duties at either Lisbon-based Benfica or current UEFA champions FC Porto next season but the Brazilian said he has not received any offers from either club. Portugal have failed in all seven attempts to beat teams which will join them at Euro 2004, held between June 12 and July 4, since Scolari took the helm of the squad, leading to calls from some fans and sports commentators for him to be fired. The Euro 2004 hosts are in Group A alongside Greece, Russia and Spain. Portugal have two more friendly matches to come before the start of Euro 2004, against Luxembourg on May 29 and against Lithuania on June 5.

Portuguese squad to get seven million bonus if win Euro 2004 May 13, 2004 LISBON (AFP) - Portugal's national team will be paid a seven-million euro (8.3-million dollar) bonus if they win the European football finals which the country will host between June 12 and July 4, sports daily Record reported. The paper said the Portuguese football federation would pay each player in the 23-man squad 200,000 euros in case of victory with the rest of the money divided up amongst coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and other team officials. Scolari, who led his native Brazil to a record fifth World Cup win in the Far East in 2002, will announce his squad for the finals on May 18. Portugal have failed in all seven attempts to beat teams which will join them at Euro 2004 since Scolari took the helm of the squad in January 2003.
nice article about Pauleta ] Much-travelled Pauleta could be Portugal's unlikely hero By Kevin Fylan LISBON, May 24 (Reuters) - Pauleta Resendes was not part of Portugal's golden generation but the late-developing striker could be the key to his more celebrated colleagues winning a trophy at their Euro 2004 farewell. Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes, better known simply as Pauleta, was born in the Azores, almost 1,500 kms away from Lisbon, in April 1973, making him a near-contemporary of Luis Figo, Joao Pinto and Rui Costa. His upbringing, so far off the footballing map, meant he was not part of the teams that won the World Youth Championship in 1989 and 1991 and he thus escaped the burden of expectation his colleagues have laboured under for so long. With little fanfare, Pauleta has matured into one of the most effective strikers in Europe, lauded in France and fondly remembered in Spain for his deft first touch and knack for the spectacular. Pauleta made his first international move to Salamanca in Spain in 1996, scoring 34 goals in two seasons before securing a move to Deportivo Coruna and winning a league championship medal in his second campaign. His form was solid rather than spectacular at Depor, with 18 goals over two seasons and he moved to Girondins Bordeaux in 2000. He responded by finding the form of his life, scoring 65 goals in three seasons and scooping two Player of the Year awards along the way, before moving to Paris St Germain before the start of the current campaign. Pauleta's early international career was also a case of slow progress following a debut against Armenia in August 1997. He was an unnoticed member of the squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2000 but his form exploded in the qualifying campaign for the 2002 World Cup, with eight goals in 10 games. He went on to score a hat-trick in Portugal's 4-0 win over Poland in the finals but could do nothing to prevent the country's first-round exit. He has confirmed his role as Portugal's leading striker by finding the net at least once in six of the last seven matches, including a four-goal blitz against Kuwait, and is third on the list of all-time goalscorers for Portugal behind Eusebio and Figo. His recent scoring run started against Norway last October, after a long barren spell, and his goal brought a warm hug from coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. "The people who have faith in me will always be rewarded," Pauleta said. Pauleta's last international goal came against Sweden in a 2-2 draw in April and he also scored against England in Faro in February, a brilliantly struck free kick that earned his side a 1-1 draw. He celebrated, as usual, with his arms stretched out in imitation of a goshawk, the national symbol of the Azores. It is a sight that could become familiar at Euro 2004
Keeper Pereira defends place in Portugal side LISBON, May 28 (Reuters) - Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira has defended his place in the country's Euro 2004 squad against critics who say veteran Vitor Baia should be in the side. The Sporting player said he had been treated like "an opponent of Portugal" after coach Luiz Felipe Scolari named him in the squad last week. He told A Bola sports newspaper: "To talk about this is a lack of respect for those who are here. There are three of us and we have Scolari's trust." Scolari picked Pereira, Quim Silva of Sporting Braga and uncapped under-21 keeper Jose Moreira of Benfica. Scolari has not called up veteran Baia since he took over the Portugal side in early 2003. Baia capped a fine domestic season with another good display in Porto's 3-0 Champions League final win over Monaco on Wednesday. Pereira, 28, is recovering from an injury to his left big toe suffered during training and may miss Portugal's friendly against Luxembourg on Saturday. Portugal are hosting the 16-team Euro 2004 championship, which starts on June 12.
