Portugal demands apology from France First Published: Nov 20, 2003 Portuguese football chiefs demanded an apology from their French counterparts for the "serious allegations" made by Raymond Domenech, the coach of the France Under-21 team in the wake of their European championship clash on Tuesday. "The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) will request that the French federation obtains a formal apology on the part of their national Under-21 coach," said Angelo Brou, the vice-president of the FPF. Domenech, whose side lost the play-off match at Clermont Ferrand, had launched a staggering attack on the Portuguese team claiming they had trashed their changing room and that their behaviour was "wild" and "unspeakable" and that the players "were not in their normal state." He also claimed that syringes were found in the Portuguese dressing room. However, earlier Thursday, Portuguese team doctor Joao Resende said the one syringe left had been used for an anti-inflammatory. "I can guarantee it has nothing to do with doping," he added. The Portuguese squad refused Tuesday to undergo a random doping test ordered by the French sports ministry. Portugal, led by Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, won the game 2-1 after losing the first leg by the same score to pull level 3-3 on aggregate and then won the penalty shoot-out 4-1. Brou said that if an apology was not forthcoming, he would make an official complaint to UEFA. Portugal coach Joao Romao said earlier this week that the damage to the roof of the dressing room was caused mostly by the players throwing him in the air to celebrate their qualification for the finals.
I've seen pictures, the roof was totally broken on a very large distance, there was food on the walls, tables broken etc... I don't think Domenech will apologise, he's too proud for that...
no, we are just well mannered and surprised by some behaviors, I think your teams with good players had to work on this sense before they'd be able to win something... after seeing the behavior of the Porto team and the behavior of this U21 team, I just can hope that all of your footballers are not like that.
lets just remember not to blow anything out of proportion guys. yes, it is unfortunate that we couldnt just leave the place, but thats it. dont imply this behaviour is either normal or accepted in portugal, because that is just silly.
it looks like Cisse will get a 5 game suspension and might be out of the Euro 04 Portugal was fine close to 7,000 euros for the damages made after the game, not mention about the doping test, it look like was never on schedule to be, was only France trying to pulling a fast one after the lost Futebol Internacional – Expulsão frente a Portugal custa cinco jogos a Cissé O avançado Djibril Cissé, expulso no último encontro entre as selecções de sub-21 de França e Portugal, que valeu o apuramento português para o Europeu da categoria, deverá ser suspenso por cinco jogos, segundo noticia a imprensa francesa.
