I went back and saw some you tube goals of Pellegrino when he played for FK Bodø/Glimt in the Conference Euro League competition and he seemed to have some good skills along the left wing. His tall stature and good dribbling down the left side seemed to create some spectacular plays. I’m assuming this is what Bruce Arena sees in training and probably why he keeps playing him. MLS is such a weird league that it’s not easy to translate all your skills or game from a Euro league. So many star players have failed so Pelle isn’t alone. I have faith in Bruce but ya sooner or later Pellegrino has got to start making the most of his chances as you only get so many in a game situation. With injuries and suspensions, I’m betting he will continue to start in the upcoming weeks.
I think Bruce has by now more or less seen enough? I think 'Grino will see fairly limited time from now on, especially with Bouda and Judd being productive and Hernán back (though he was back on the injured list this week).
Just watched the highlights. We were listening to the end of the game with these same announcers on the way home, and I thought they were, if anything, more sympathetic to us than to the Timbers, which was refreshing. But -- the Water Boy misses, and the missed PK. Shoulda woulda coulda.
The announcers dramatically changed their tone after the blown call on the second yellow to Harkes. Up to that point they had been pretty home-ish.
Even from the get, the male announcer called out a couple of calls that went out way. Of course, they knew the ForestKillers better than they knew us, and they did call it like they had more respect for Portland. As you say, they shifted toward us, but from the non-PK call. One of the announcers said: I don't see how that's not a PK. So better than some announcers, but most random fans could have done a better job. Go Quakesfans!!
Jamie Watson was a great MLS player and I’ve always found his commentary to be insightful and non-biased. I always wished the Clash had him as a player.
This game’s color analyst Jamie Watson had already done some Earthquakes games on MLS Season Pass, usually paired with play-by-play announcer Josh Eastern. However, I’d never previously heard of this game’s play-by-play announcer Jessica Charman. It turns out that until a few months ago, she was Charlotte FC’s radio color analyst the past three seasons. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Those announcers were pure trash, i had to switch over to the spanish ones who were vastly superior even if less understandable.
But wasn’t it back in 2000 when there were rumors that the Earthquakes were looking into acquiring Jan Åge Fjørtoft (as well as Yves Buelinckx) that then-deputy commissioner Sunil Gulati responded with, “We don’t sign Norwegians!”? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Who in here would have thought that we would be looking for Judd to come on the field and save us? Of course, it’s still early, but i can’t recall who else in the past that we have cursed and then he turned his game around. I can’t even figure out how he is doing this, cuz last night it looked like he was content to just hang around the pitch for 10 mins. But he nabbed 2 great opportunities. Versus Pelle, who kept getting handed opps and couldn’t do anything with them.
Are we thinking of the same Jamie Watson? He was 10 years old when the Clash started. He played a couple of years with bad expansion RSL and then was a USL player for pretty much the rest of his career. I agree though, as a color guy he's not bad. He has been almost a regular guest with Ted Ramey on his Soccer Hour podcast and he does know the Quakes, and has decent insight into the league.
Listening in the car, I found her voice grating, but at home with the headphones on, she sounded smoother.
Yves? That Yves mentioned by the forefathers in the Quakes Big Soccer fable? He is up there with the fabled Chinese waiter in London.
Probably not since Gulati is no longer with the league. But to further show that I’m old : Erling Haaland was born the very year Gulati made that statement all those years ago. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
And as seen in that link, he starred in the Belgian version of “The Matrix”, to boot. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
I thought Charman was ok - generally insightful and knowledgeable with respect to the league, if a bit overcaffeinated (there's something unexpected and jarring about a high-energy British broadcaster). I actually thought Judd was really helpful even before the goal. There was a play where he alertly anticipated and intercepted a Portland pass in the final third, and he's also very good about moving into spaces in transition in order to provide a passing outlet and buy the team time to push forward.
I'd love to podcast a game with you and @don gagliardi. Of course, there's no way it'd pass FCC muster for broadcast!
