One of my daughters teachers completely got screwed over by a Muslim guy.

This was handled poorly. I would have grouped Muslims with Pentecostals and serial rapists.

And the Pope can't tell Bishops to keep their hands off children?

And then they went to Sweden for an operation? :D

    ----

To answer Matrim's question: Yes, and they're in the White House now.

I'm Catholic, and I have to say, the timing of this is absurd. He does have a point as I knew a woman who married an Iranian guy who then convinced here to move to Iran. Let's just say that the sufferage movement never made it quite that far around the globe.

But still, the Church does have a lot of skeletons in its closet that need to be cleaned out before making these grand moral pronouncements. Many would argue that the Catholic Church is not exactly leading the charge on womens rights issues. I brought this subject up with a woman priest once . . . oh, wait a sec . . . that's right, women are not allowed to be priests. Hmmm.

Well if they don't marry a muslin husband, some of them might never have one.

So it comes down the political correctness vs. biological clock.

I think biological clock wins every time.

Why does the Pope hate women?

Yeah, but whethere you agree with it or not the Catholic church doesn't look at that issue as a women's rights issue but as a children's rights issue.

And we all know the Catholic church has a hands-on approach to children's rights.

But of course we have to try and defame the church some more and decry the whole of the institution for the abuses of some priests because obviously Vatican III stated that priests shall molest boys for the good of their eternal souls . The Pope is old and senile and the senior cardinals would rather most of these problems go away than solve them. However, I find it disingenuous and not the least bit surprising that those who have an axe to grind with the Catholic church specifically and religion in general would try to paint the whole of the faith as being approving of child abuse. Its too bad that the there are no catholic religious running shelters, missions, hospital, and schools around the world that actually provide untold amounts of aid, support, and spiritual uplifting for children and adults alike. Oh, thats right, there are. Please, come pile on the Catholic church some more. Its not as if I don't expect it.

Would it make you feel better if I said "The Vatican" instead?

While I'm not trying to "bash" the church, the problem of the abuse, the intentional neglect and the cover up has been going on a lot longer than JP2's papacy. At this point, though, the church's hierarchy has lost a lot of moral credibility and goodwill. In short, they're kind of like organized religion's version of the Bush administration.

Yes, as a matter of fact. Its just a touchy subject for me and tend to get defensive when it comes to it. The Vatican is learning....slowly. But they still stick their foot in it and some there seem to forget that the Pope does not wield the influence or power he held in the middle ages, nor should he.

I know we're all only human and all, but don't you think that as self-appointed spiritual leaders of a flock that they should long ago have acquired the wisdom and moral courage to know better than to ignore and then try to cover up so much immoral child abuse and to do something about it? Just sayin'...

PS. Sorry for the tone of my first post as well. As I said, I just get touchy about it sometimes. There are two radio talk show hosts in LA who like to pile on on a daily basis about the Catholic church and religion and general and it really gets my blood boiling. It's just frustrating because I love my religion and my faith yet detest what has been done by those who supposedly share it.

Fair enough. It never occurred to me that anyone would read what I wrote as "all Catholics are bad", but I understand that some people would be sensitive to anything that even remotely smacks of that. In the end, that's what I'm criticizing the Vatican for in this particular instance.

Also, all generalizations are false. And I never make predictions and never will.

No, you're right. All of the priests should have been defrocked and excommunicated as far as I'm concerned. Then they should have been handed over to secular authorities for prosecution. Like I said though, I'm afraid that senior members of the Curia still are under the illusion that the Church is almost a nation unto itself and operate in "middle ages" mode as it were.

So -- the Catholic church discourages mixed marriages between Christian Roman Catholics and non-Christians. This is news??

I dunno - as a practicing Catholic I must say that I am as embarrassed that this Pope is leading or flock as I am that GWB is the current occupant of our White House

(and I didn't even get to vote for either.)

Apropos of largely nothing, I still have vived memories of that Sally Fields movie where she marries a Muslim man in the West, they move back to the Middle East somewhere, she ends up getting seriously abused at the hands of not only her husband but his extended family, and she has to trecherously flee with her child across various borders to reach freedom.

All based on a true story, though I don't know much more about it or how often this actually occurs in the real world.
