Arena cannot live without Wolff, regardless of how crappy he plays

That's the biggest difference between Wolff and Twellman. When Wolff plays bad it was because he didn't play well, but if Twellman is his usual crappy self for the Nats, it was because of Ralston's, Klein's, Beasley's or Donovan's fault for not doing all the hard work for him and giving him superb service which Mr. MVP requires to do anything positive. :D

Found this in an article on yahoo sports, that it was interesting and revealing.

Why is Conrad getting the news from Donovan, before he got the official e-mail? Sounds to me like Donovan had a say in the selection of players. I mean, I was joking about Landy Cakes being Arena's butt plug, but to me this shows that arena and Landy are closer than I thought.

I agree, I'm an MLS fan overall and I feel that Taylor was a better player than Ching. Also saw Taylor play here at UMD. I can't believe, but you never know though, anything can happen between now and the WC start. CA got the Right back spot with Hejduk's injury. While we don't want to see any injuries it is a posibility and Taylor could get his chance.

This is true, if TnT would be more of a team player he would have been packing right now. I mean is it really that bad to go get coffee and carry bruce's bags? :p

That's such narrow thinking that I have to conclude you don't really believe it.

There WILL be times when the US defense is under tremendous pressure and the midfield is all back in it's own end. In those situations, it is CRITICAL to have a forward who can hold the ball while getting grabbed, pulled, bumped, assaulted, etc. while the midfielders have a chance to get up field. If not, the assault just intensifies. And this IS a problem the Revolution have!

As for it being all about goals for a forward, the BEST OFFENSE the Revs have EVER had in their history was when they were starting Dario Fabbro, a notorious non-scorer. There's more than one way to skin a cat ...

And, FWIW, notwithstanding a single goal that no forward from anywhere should miss, Ching is the one scoring goals and Twellman is the one that isn't.

If you want a perfect example of what's ailing Twellman lately, watch the tape of the last game, right around the 23rd minute - a promising offensive chance ends with Twellman coughing up a ball right on his foot. Not an isolated play, by any means.

If you want to talk about why hacks like Olsen, Wolff and Hejduk are (or were) on the team, I'm wondering too.

O'Brien and Johnson are sooooo much better than their potential replacements, that for the US team to get past the first round, we have to hope that they can be fit and in form.

I know, and I haven't even READ that thread yet.

I think it is several things:

    * TnT has been the face of the Revs for longer, worked harder, stayed put in Foxboro, and done everything that Arena/Nicol has asked him too. He has been well behaved.

    * Dempsey has not been around as long, has not always appeared to bust his hump, and his altercation with Franchino left a bad taste with some of the fans, particularly BS posters. At the same time, it seems to have made him more popular with other fans.

    * I thought TnT was behind Chinger two years ago until Ching got injured, and TnT looked to have made it past him big time with his Norway/Japan games! He was getting so much positive public press from Wynalda, Donovan, Balboa...it just seemed like a done deal.

    * Dempsey also has seemed a lock, and so what is there to say.

I feel worse for TnT thatn I feel good for Clint.

    where's fabbro now?

I guess what i'm saying is i don't disagree, you do need to be able to hold the ball to be a complete player (and i agree twelllman has not ever been good there) but, if you can't score, you have no business as an MLS starting fwd, let alone USMNT fwd.

what takes pressure off defenses are forwards who are dead scary, and a threat to score. if the other team *fears* your forwards, they show respect that turns into a tactical advantage.

this is my problem with so-called Amids like cancela, who don't score or threaten to score.

fwds who can hold the ball but do not command respect may buy you a few seconds, but thats it.

fwds who are a threat to score will score if left alone, and will stretch and force tactial changes otherwise.

fwds who can hold the ball only are actually a DISADVANTAGE, as a defender know all they have to to is contain.

if ronaldo (or even mcbride, ej, twellamn or ching) is comming at you with the ball or in a position to score you treat him differently than if wolff is in the same situaiton.

if you know someones first touch is going to go to the goal, you think about it differently than if you know they will try to control the ball, look up, take thier time and hold the ball.

fwds who can't score are the unics of soccer. we need warriors not unics.

    I agree with you there!

Let's keep in mind that we are talking about *situational* subs here. McBride, EJ, Donovan and Beasley are where we must expect the goals to come from - and they can't be treated casually by defenders.

We're most likely to see a Twellman or a Ching if we're trying to protect a 1-goal lead or a tie late in the game.

Thanks guys (REV-OKe and rkupp). This has been a pretty interesting discussion. I somehow find myself agreeing with both of you.

I feel pretty bad for the guy (Twellman) for not making it - especially when it probably came down to a virtual coin flip.

Part of me is happy though that he's going to be available for the Revs while others are off to camp/Germany.

It's all my fault. I had Taylor sign my US Jersey at MTR about a week before the team was named. He never really acknowledged the jersey and seemed like "oh shite, I really shouldn't be signing this before ... oh well what the heck."

Boy, I'll never do that again.

    So who made the banner?

Love how he posed in front of it!

Eat that Arena! Hope TT scores a goal in every game until the WC starts. What will Arena say then? "But Landy Cakes told me to pick Chingy. He told me he would do that thing I like if I did!":p

I wouldn't bet against Twellman going to Germany, yet.

The 4 forwards Arena selected have considerable injury histories.

I'm going to call it right now. At least one of them goes down with an injury before the US are finished in Germany. If Twellman continues to put the ball in the net, he'll be the first one called off the alternate list.

Remember, you heard it here first.

Thanks for making the banner. It was clear that TnT appreciated the sentament and he went right to it after he scored.

When's the drop-dead date for bringing in alternates due to injury?

Also, as much as we love Taylor, is it right to assume he's simply first in line? I think Ching was chosen because he filled a need that Arena saw better than TNT. If, for example, Eddie Johnson goes down, is Taylor the best choice to fill his role? Or are Rolfe or Casey?

Josh Wolff is, but he's already going. Don't see why the US need two people to fill that role, especially if neither is starting, so why not Twellman?
