Doesn't matter, you'd have to be delusional to think this team is anywhere near even reaching the quarterfinal, not to mention semifinal, not to mention final, not to mention winning it lol.

People need to stop slurping down the American soccer media's blind cheerleading of this team. To say we are lightyears away from even making the final would be a gross understatement.

Maybe not but there's still a reason why domestic coaches out perform nondomestic coaches in the international realm. They understand the nuances of their player pool better.

Sure, I will agree with you there, but I'd be fine if we got someone like (I don't actually want these guys, just easy examples) Wilfred Nancy, Oscar Pareja, or Tata Martino. A foreigner with first hand knowledge of MLS that has had success (so not a bum like Frank de Boer, or Thierry Henry who is a con artist).

Honestly, my first move would be to get on my knees and beg Marsch to come over from Canada, but that seems like a pipe dream at this point, until the USSF is nuked and built from scratch again at least.

And then the World Cup happened and honestly believe his perspective changed. He saw what the fan base can be.

But as someone who goes to almost all the games, he's also right. The US fanbase is ignorant fools (at best) or complete fvcking idiots (at worst). Ticket prices have obviously impacted some of this over the past few years but that's not all of it.

Ready for this.... most (almost all) fan bases are ultra-biased numbskulls that don't know shit (most fans don't realize this because 99% of them only pay attention to their team and no one else), but most (almost all) coaches know better than to tell them their dumb and don't understand the sport.

I'm out on Pareja, he always failed once he gets to the playoffs, always resorts to bunker and counter, no matter the quality of his players.

I don't think Wilf would have the time to implement his system properly, nor the patience to do nothing for months at a time.

I don't want Tata, he just happens to fit the criteria.

Honestly, I don't think there is a standout candidate right now. I'd like Marsch, but that ain't happening. Cherundolo is certainly an option. Curtain just got hired. I'm open to Callahan in Nashville. Schmetzer... nah, I've always been skeptical of him. Vermes, no. Wolff, no. Noonan... I'd be open to the conversation, but probably not.

    Who would even be left?

    Why?

My view is that there are no great native English-speaking managers in the game right now.

That aside, does it really matter?

I guess the one area where I'd question it, is theres never really been anything to convince me that hiring an expensive, high profile club coach from Europe elevates national teams performances over the long run.

Moreover I would argue that sticking with a home grown coach who knows the native culture and ecosystem is far more important. But if a candidate / coach has a foreign passport, but has worked and managed in that country for many years and understands the football culture like a native. Then that's a different case.

Fair point. But I'd put it down to the very ordinary nature of the roster, rather than the manager.

Get better players, and then the team should play better.

Meh. This time around, 18 out of 26 players came from outside MLS. 17 of those came from Europe. The need for the manager to have deep knowledge of the ecosystem is an antiquated view, in a day and age where the overwhelming majority of the roster no longer comes from that ecosystem. I would suspect that the ratio of non-MLS players in the USMNT will only increase going forward.

What's more, having someone who knows Europe can be beneficial towards recruiting the ever-increasingly important dual nationals, who for the most part also aren't in MLS.

And finally, getting someone who's in the "in crowd" with USSF gave us Berhalter twice, and a geezing geezer in Arena to fail to qualify in '18. I'd rather not try that again in today's day and age.

Berhalter was pretty darn good until he wasn't. And while Arena didn't do his legacy any favors down in Trinidad, the most-certainly-not-"in crowd" Klinsmann botched the first half of that final round well before Arena got there.

And USSF shot themselves in the foot by decicing to play the Costa Rica WCQ at Red Bull Arena—easy access to Costa Rican fans in the Northeast—turning that match into an “away” crowd for the US, instead of choosing a more hostile environment for the Ticos.

I will always blame that on Klinsy for losing to Mexico here. Win that one and we were in.

As I just said, Klinsman blew 2018 by losing to Mexico at Crew Stadium. He still is the only coach to lose to Mexico in Ohio for WCQ.

Before that game, I believe the USMNT had only given up one goal in Columbus. Every other game was a shutout win.

    IIRC, of course.

    Eh.

After four straight 2-0s in Columbus, a couple draws at Azteca, some Gold Cup wins -- sooner or later, a team as good as Mexico was going to bite us in a Qualifier. Shit happens. Getting bounced in the next match 4-0 to Costa Rica was probably worse.

I did actually forget how quickly after that Klinsmann got canned. I had myself convinced that he coached more of that hex than he did.

1-1 draw against Jamaica in the final match of the semifinal round after the U.S. had already qualified. And that goal was a penalty.

We didn't win them all; the first WCQ at the Stadium was a scoreless draw against Costa Rica, also in the semifinal round.

Meh, all Arena had to do was park the bus for 90 minutes, get the draw, and move on. And his ego wouldn't let him do it.

As to Berhalter, meh. I suppose him bumslaying CONCACAF fodder, almost always at home can give some their jollies. But OTOH, he also had the moronic idea of trying to play with a single pivot, and that player not being named, "Busquets" or "Rodri," before his injuries.

In fact, for as good as Adams is, he's not a pivot at all, but rather a midfield destroyer. (And a good one at that role.) FFS, even Rodri can no longer play a single pivot any more, yet Tyler Adams is gonna do it?

As stated upthread, there are no great native English-speaking managers in the game right now.

What does that have to do with the poster to whom I was replying? He was trying to tell us that the next manager has to know "the ecosystem," but as I mentioned in the post you quoted, 18 of the 26 players came from outside "the ecosystem."

I think players from outside the US will continue to be a bigger part of the roster. And dual nationals will have to be a part of that mix. So, even though I don't think it will matter that much, the next manager should come from outside "the ecosystem." (And not be a native English speaker.)

Meh, Canada did not advance any further than the US. Unfortunately for him, he's native English-speaking, and his roster lacks depth of quality.

    Correct.

I agree as well. It mostly doesn't matter who is manager, because the players are what they are.

That said, Poch thinking that a 23 year old Reyna who moves like a 38 year old Preki was going to "out-technique" Belgium was "an interesting strategy, let's see how that works out for them, Cotton."

I did think it would have been better to park the bus, put on all the athletes, and make it a track meet between Weah/Wright/Balogun vs their backline. I thought it dumb to try to out possess friggin Belgium, but the US has better athletes than they have. (Shrugs)
