Here's a place to let the forum know about upcoming politics-related television programs I'm very excited about this one: Frontline – “China in the Red” Thursday, February 13 Four years in the making, this documentary chronicles three pivotal years in China's historic evolution from a rigid Communist society to an exploding market economy. For more than half a century, millions of Chinese workers labored in state-run factories that provided cradle-to-grave job security. But the economic reforms that have brought the world's most populous nation economic prosperity and world-power status now threaten the livelihood of many Chinese workers. The Chinese Communist Party can no longer afford to subsidize the factories, and millions of workers are being laid off, with no social safety net to catch them.
I've decided to make this a sticky and here are the rules. Post ONLY programming news, no disussion of said programs. Discussion can occur in other threads. If people decide to ignore the rules I wil lock the thread and the only way programming posts can be made are by PMing me with the details. So don't mess it up. Thanks
"Good Kurds, Bad Kurds" On WorldLink TV (9410 on DISH) A story that the national press wouldn't touch: a campaign of ethnic cleansing perpetrated against Kurdish minorities by the Turkish military, using U.S.-made weapons. This independently produced film -- nine years in the making -- delves deeply into the U.S.'s complicity in this human rights disaster, indicting the mainstream news outlets that, by staying quiet, helped perpetuate the violence. Shot, in part, by three-time Academy Award winner Haskell Wexler, "Good Kurds, Bad Kurds" travels from Santa Barbara, home to a small Kurdish refugee community, to Washington D.C., where an activist struggles to gain the attention of lawmakers and the media and fight his deportation, and to Turkey, where the anti-Kurd campaign continues. This week on PBS - Nova: "Battle Of The X-Planes". Watch two major government defense contractors, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, compete to get a $200 billion defense contract to build the next generation of US fighter planes. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/xplanes/ Even peaceniks can watch this and say "wow" with regards to what these engineers can do, but it also gives an inside look as to the way that government contracts are awarded.
On A&E Sunday evening (10 Eastern / Pacific, 9 Central): The Point: Suicide Bombers This joint investigation with the "New York Times" takes viewers inside the minds of terrorists to reveal troubling insights into their actions. We visit the Palestinian refugee camps that provide a seemingly inexhaustible supply of human bombs, discover the terrifying future predicted by psychiatrists working with Palestinian children, and find out what America must do to defend its citizens against this threat.
The War Behind Closed Doors I'm really looking forward to this one. The War Behind Closed Doors on Frontline (PBS) Thursday, February 20th at 9pm FRONTLINE examines the hidden story of what is really driving the Bush administration to war with Iraq. The investigation asks whether the publicly reported reasons--fear of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction or a desire to insure and protect America's access to oil--are only masking the real reason for the war. Through interviews with well-placed sources in and outside of the administration, FRONTLINE unravels a story known only to the Washington insiders. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/iraq/
Tonight (Wednesday February 26) at 9pm on CBS: 60 Minutes II The Dan Rather interview with Saddam Hussein
60 Minutes just announced a new segment of the show, starting this Sunday: Bill Clinton and Bob Dole debating a different issue each week. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030306/ap_en_tv/tv_clinton_dole I'm interested in seeing what Dole has to say, actually. He seemed to change a lot after leaving office.
POTUS speech tonight @ 8 The office next to me is holding dinner/gala for radio and television broadcasters tonight. Problem is that all the guests are canceling because the President has called a speech. This is probably the last pep rally before we attack. Although, Dan Rather seems to think he can attend the speech at 8 and make his alloted time at the dinner which is 9:15. Don't count on it Dan.
Welcome To North Korea I just finished watching this on Cinemax. A fascinating and rare look at North Korea. Some really amazing footage and an interesting look at both sides of, and inside the DMZ. Folks who get Cinemax West feed can still catch it at 7:30 PT, and it will be shown again on Saturday at 7 am ET/PT.
