This year or next, I suspect Peter Nowak will be gone or will retire. I believe that he turns 40 in 2004. The Fire attracted significant Polish support from the beginning with Peter and other players. Will there still be significant Polish support after Peter? I sure hope so. Polish Ultras have done so much to make Section 8 the best fan section in MLS. Heck, these guys even forgot about Ukrainian-Polish antipathy and adopted Dema Kovalenko as one of their own. No hard feelings over Lvov when it comes to football, I guess. I hope they get the Polish food concession back when we return to Soldier Field. That alone will draw a few fans, not all of them Polish, I might add.....
FWIW, I have wondered the same thing myself. It's a valid question. Can't imagine what the Ugh means. I haven't seen Krolpolski around here lately, perhaps he'd like to tackle this one?
I don't think it's a valid question at all! Anyone who knows anything knows these guys support the Fire, not frigging Nowak. Shoot, if they were gonna pick up and leave en masse, they would have after Kosa and Jerzy departed rather unceremoniously. Christ, DIEGO GUTIERREZ was generally the favorite player of a good number of them, and he's long gone. They're just plain old fans now, seriously, like anyone else in section 8 or the like. They're season ticket holders. They go to road matches. They have for years now. To equate them with the fickleness of the mass of Salvadorans in DC or Mexicans in LA is silly.
This is a dead issue. I remember a few years ago talking with a Bulgarian guy in Chicago about Hristo. He was excited about him joining the team, but he made a point of stating that he had been a fan of the team for a while and would remain a fan after Hristo left. We all get excited when true star calibre players join our team, but our joy in seeing the team crush all opposition (or anguish when they fail to do so) does not recede depending on the star power on the field.
"To equate them with the fickleness of the mass of Salvadorans in DC or Mexicans in LA is silly." Nobody said that did they? Typical of Hala Madrid.
No Tom. YOU said it. You said it when you questioned whether the "Polish fans" were loyal enough to the club to stick upon Peter Nowak's inevitable departure this offseason or next. That's de facto equation with the Salvadoran population in DC or the Mexican fans in LA. Time and again you've shown how little you know: with this issue, with your theory MLS is fixed through the referees, with your unfounded accusations that the media is out to get the sport, and most notably with your insistence that there is an anti-masculine bias in American sport. Yet still you come up with more and more confounding theories and conclusion with no basis in fact or reality. It boggles the mind how you are a professional lawyer, and that anyone with half an once of sense would come to you for advice on where to buy coffee, much less for binding legal service. And my name is Liam, thank you very much.
Personal insults are prohibited by TOS, but how many times have we seen a good discussion destroyed by a Moderator? There is an anti-soccer bias in the U.S. It has been discussed here many times. Many people think some MLS games are fixed. You may recall that referee's letter that caused such a scandal last fall. Just my opinion, but one that more and more people share. I would never compare Chicago's Polish fans to DC-area Guanacos or LA-area Muchachos, who, on occasion, have behaved badly. I think one of the reasons Section 8 has been so great is the Polish influence. I went to several Fire games a couple of years ago with a Ukrainian guy who did not want to sit in Section 8, and he said that it looked like a proper European cheering section, the highest compliment he could give us. I think the Polish Ultras showed their mettle this summer when they trekked out to Naperville when many others did not. Go ahead, flame away. Genguye Pane
