Klinsy's team should have lost by more than GGG lost to the Netherlands, and only got to ET because Tim Howard played the game of his life.
"should have"? is that really how you evaluate things? belgium didnt have any really good chances.....that game was much closer than the netherlands match but, big picture, i kinda agree.....berhalter held the team back much more than klinsmann did. this generation of usmnt should be able to hang with the netherlands, imo. failing so spectacularly shouldve been the end of greggs reign of terror...re-hiring him after that match was absurd.
Weird timing for this weird post. I address your definition of expectations in another post, but now that we have had good ole Americans in charge for close to 8 years, what benefit have we gotten other than the results that you expected? How are we better off? The only thing I can think of, which I think is an exaggeration, is we have some decent dual nationals, but don't know if that is positive as the American who was passionate about the game in this country eliminated as many as he could. I am pretty sure the US program made a lot more progress from 2011 thru 2016 than since. Nice shot at our players. If you aren't a fan of them, then what are you really a fan of then? Berhalter? The federation? Past players?
Not going to nitpick about the absurd low level of expectations you have, but more broadly why not just hold the guy to the standards he repreatedly mentioned publicly. I can recall two stated goals. Did we "disorganized opponents with the ball" when they made him out to be a tactical genius after starting over a year after Arena left? Did we "change the way the world view American soccer"? Did somebody forget to tell you that the players enjoying playing for him wasn't an actual positive and more a sign of poor leadership and that the great culture they advertised was actually rotten. Lets hope we never have a coach again who tries to unite a locker room in that fashion.
This is utterly clueless. The game plan against Belgium was risky and almost worked with multiple in game adjustments, while Berhalter's vs the Netherlands was epicly naive and even the the opposing coach was shocked that he never adjusted.
this thread title: PochettinoOut always makes me see: Pochettino in o out? is he in o' out? hmmm.... i hope hes in
Is this going to be the first time Big Soccer has ever started a (Coach) Out thread when the coach never was in/hired?
Doesn't matter if he doesn't get hired, he's still too much of a USSF insider because he talked to USSF about the job.
Why would anyone be a fan of US soccer (other than those like Clint Eastwood)? I suspect the Berhalter defenders who are dragging our (euro based) players right now are actually pretty pissed about this
Unlikely...................................... ..................this is the way the board has behaved forever. We could win the World Cup, and people would find 400 ways to whine.
Other countries would not give the USMNT the validation of winning the World Cup. There would be a day of mourning in the country that lost to the US, as well as wailing and gnashing of teeth across Europe and South America. Also lots of rioting and destroyed property in that country that lost to the US. "How could those dumb, fat, redneck mutt Americans win the World Cup?" etc
In fairness, the US would've had no defenders left to play the semifinal. Goose and Cherundolo were injured. Berhalter, Pope and even Mastroeni were on yellow-card suspensions. Arena would've had to pick from Regis, Sanneh, Llamosa and Hejduk, or maybe moved Eddie Lewis or John O'Brien back. (This was years before anyone thought of Beasley as a defender.) Also, O'Brien probably got away with a handball against Mexico.
And the US needed a Portugese meltdown against Korea to even get out of the group. Which of course wouldn't been needed if Landon hadn't been so mean to a Polish defender by touching him with his shoulder chalking off a goal. Which is is to say luck is probably the most important thing in any W.C. for a team at the US level. Some good luck and we can make a QF's, some bad luck and we finish on bottom of the group.
Ruh Roh..... people gonna be big mad about this..... An anecdote that didn’t make the cut here:I’m told Mauricio Pochettino met with some MLS team owners last night and today, to talk about player development and other matters. The Union’s Jay Sugarman and Richard Leibovitch were among the attendees. https://t.co/TT0wjzVa3q— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) September 13, 2024
