I know that perhaps it is crazy to talk about rivalries in a league that will only be entering its 9th season---but hey all fans have a particular opponent that makes you stand up and say "Oh no!! we gotta play them again!!" or "This game is gonna rock" or " We own this team! It's hard to have a "genuine" rivalry in MLS since there's only 10 teams and each team seems to entirely revamp its' roster each season. One season Diallo is the most hated player, the next day he's in a Metros uniform. Same for Serna.

I first thought Rochester might be a future rival if they get a team in MLS, but I think DC will stay our primary rival for a many years to come simply because of the history and proximity of the two clubs. If Philadelphia ever gets a team or if NYC gets one all to themselves, I think they will provide for more intense rivalries, at which point NYR Metro may be able to get into some Hooligan action. We are of course talking many, many years down the road here.
Since I started the thread I thought I would share some of my own thoughts.I would have to agree that DC is probably the most hated rival and Fire the toughest. I think most promising new rival (not much history in the past, but recently there might be the seeds of a rivalry) is a split between New England Revolution and Columbus Crew. The Revs were a real pain this year and the last game between the two teams was full of hard fouls and rough play. The Crew are another team that is beginning to annoy me, games in the regular season between these two teams have recently been a lot closer than they should be--- and ,call it jealousy or whatever, but they seem to haunt the Metros in the U.S. Open Cup. Its still too early to call a game between the Metros and either of these two teams a true rivalry--but i think they might be headed down that path!! My hope is that the Metros finally live up to their potential this year and rock everybody!! =)
I think most agree with DC, but how can you call NE or Columbus new rivals? They are in a 5 team division and they have all been playing each other every year. This year, did you not see the Mathis v Franchino spat? The only western team you name is LA. The Metros easiest opponent is Dallas. Every team in the east is a rival.
well not new rival in the sense that they've never faced each other---i use the term rival in the sense of it being a "special" game when the two teams play each other. It's as if suddenly the two teams start to play harder and their blood pumps faster. As an example---Colorado and the Metros have both been in the league since the beginning and have played each other many times--however i wouldnt consider them a "rival". It's the difference between "just another game" and a game that has an extra dimension to it. Some teams develop this chemistry between themselves and some don't. Up until this year Metros and New England was not really something special at least in my mind, while Metros and Columbus has been something that has been building very slowly and has the potential to explode.
could someone explain to me why the revs aren't your number 2 rival team? aren't the revs much closer to u guys location wise?
