Don't know if this has been discussed but from mlsnet

    PLAYOFFS DETAILS

Playoff berths will be determined by points in the standings upon the completion of the regular season on Oct. 21; all 13 teams will have played 30 games. If two teams are tied on points, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head results, the second tiebreaker is goal differential, and the third is goals scored for the season. (Subsequent tiebreakers are available in the Fact and Record Book).

The top two teams in each conference qualify and are seeded 1 & 2 in their respective four-team playoff conference brackets.

The four MLS teams with the next most points, regardless of conference, receive “wildcard” berths.

    • The four wildcard teams will be seeded according to conference first.

    • If more than four teams qualify from one conference, those finishing lower than fourth in their conference will shift over to the other conference bracket.

    • A team switching conference brackets will be seeded below all other teams in its new conference playoff bracket.

If the fire finish 5th in the east they will play the top seed in the west in the first round.

Because we'll be in good form by then, and we can beat any team from the west.

We'd most likely be matched up with Chivas and they're as good as anyone in the east. At least if we were against DC we'd have familiarity to go on.

Although going into LA and then the winner of Houston/Dallas, we'd have a ton of away support all the way through the playoffs.

We're gonna play a really good team no matter what: DC/NE or CHV/DAL/HOU.

Here is the up to date overall standings that someone (can't remember who) came up with in a single table.

Just at first glance, with only 7 games to play for the Fire, I think that we are surely going to be at least the last team in. We have a decent shot at catching KC for 7th and an outside chance at catching NY for 6th. Beyond that, it would take a miracle to get into the top 5.

Chivas USA appears to be in the driver's seat in the West with 3 games in hand on Houston and just 2 points back. They also have 1 game in hand on Dallas and are 1 point ahead of them.

If things play out the way they're looking right now, we'll either get DC or Chivas in the first round. Frankly, I'd rather have DC because a home game against Chivas might not be a huge "home" advantage.

Quite possibly, but note that Blanco will be a factor in these games, and tons of Blanco fans are also America fans, hated rival of Chivas. The Fire might want to adopt a yellow jersey for these games, so you can quickly tell who their fans are in the stands.

Is it gready to hope for at least 6th place so that we get an automatic Open Cup berth? We may be able to do it....

I wonder if it ever will come to pass that some team is accused of tanking a game late in the season so they can finish 5th in a conference and face a weaker team in the other conference.

IMHO they should keep the top 2 in east and top 2 in the west and seed those 1-4 however they like.

Then seed 5-8 with their 'wildcard' on points no matter which conference.

Fcuk the east/west conference BS in the playoffs.

This year was actually a step in the right direction regarding our playoffs by keeping the first four slots to the top two in each conference THEN going to total points regardless of conference.

Though who you play and which conference you get switched to is enough to cause a few headaches this year...

    ;)
