Players like Dichio are great for MLS as a whole

Not saying I condone biting or anything like that, but in addition to the actual soccer being played, I really enjoyed watching Dichio on Saturday. I think some of those 'bad boy', loved yet hated, fan favorite, controversial type of stars, are exciting to watch (Think Dennis Rodman in his NBA days). I'm not saying I want Joey Bartons, but colorful players like that are fun to watch for not only their talent but their passion and energy (sometimes positive, sometimes negative) for the game and the fans.

I have to agree with you 100%. He has potential to be a person you can love to hate. he just needs to make more happen on the field soccer-wise consistently in order for it to be really fun.

It's not fun to to hate someone who isn't the star or at least a major MAJOR supporting player. He seems to be off to a decent start though.

Dichio seems like a guy who came into the leaguie with the attitude that he was going to show these small-time MLS players how to play physical. Well, so far the clown has managed to get himself cards and a reputation. Referees talk among themselves and Danny is off to a really bad start with them. Carlos Ruiz was dominating the league until the refs got tired of his flopping. These days, he can't buy a call. Dichio is going to end up remembered as a thug who pased through MLS leaving a trail of cards in his wake.

    I agree.

Too many - like 99.9999 percent of MLS players are just plain boring. I don't mean their style of play. I mean their personalities on and off the field.

Dichio is definitely not boring. I might hate him, but I won't be bored by him.

Dichio was fun as hell to watch. I get sick of guys whacking somebody then helping him up. You whacked for a reason didn't you? Why help him up then? We can only hope MLS gets a bit more nasty to spice up things. You know Chicago-Toronto already has a great rivalry after that game.

Dichio is a legend in his own time. First goal of our expansion side, AND first ejection in one game? As long as the MLS lasts, and Toronto has a team, we shall never forget our warrior Dichio. Off the pitch he has had nothing but praise for our fans and our city, and on the pitch he plays like he wants the win as much as we do.

I know other fans will hate him, I am OK with that I guess, but he is already a hero to Toronto :).

Guys like Dichio are also a really good '**** you' to assholes in the media like Jim Rome.

Id like to see Rome tell Dichio he is playing a pansy sport.

What is it with the people that talk about this incident on this forum? Are they too stupid to have watched the entire incident before they speak? Dichio should have punched Pickens in his face for the kick with the studs he took on the thigh. But instead when Pickens put his hand in his face like a woman, Dichio does what he needs to without raising his hands. Too bad the ref was such rubbish, or the right man would have been thrown out for the Fire. I don't say Dichio shouldn't have been tossed, but Pickens should have as well.

    Please.

I agreed with denver_mugwamp's post as it was the most accurate in this thread.

The first thing I ever heard out of Dichio's mouth was how "no one like him has played in this league" (meaning a player with his physical style) and based on that comment and the CBC announcers' somewhat ignorant/arrogant comments I had that opinion of Dichio even before this game.

Going back to his comments I quoted, I can think of Mamadou (sp?) Diallo right off the top of my head and I'm sure there have been others...

I don't know about Dichio. He looks pretty inmobile and slow to me. Toronto plays a lot better and exciting when he was off the pitch (albeit it was 10 v 10)

Yeah. As a TFC fan, a player like Dichio is exactly what we need. He is becoming the face of the franchise and you can not market a team without a face. In Toronto, Mats Sundin is the face of the Leafs, Vernon Wells is the face of the Jays, Chris Bosh is the face of the Raptors and Micheal Clemons (albeit being a head coach) is the face of the Argonauts. A team can not be marketted properly if it doesn't have that face. Toronto FC is trying to make Jim Brennan that face, since he is a well articulated Canadian who played in the EPL, is still relatively young and in all honesty, has a very presantable face. But marketing a defender is really hard to do. Dichio has come in and immidiately become that face, without the help of the marketting department.

Random soccer fact: Michael "Pinball" Clemons played both soccer AND football at William & Mary. Given his balance and pace, I bet he'd have been a very good soccer player had he stuck with the sport.

He only played one season of college soccer, but at one time W&M had Clemons and future Major League Baseball Player Curtis Pride, who was on the US U17 national soccer team, on campus and neither was playing on the soccer team.

Back to Dichio. I think he's exactly the type of player that the Toronto area would embrace and he'd make a great face for the team.

I also think he's a perfect villain for MLS fans of other teams to hate.

why wasn't pickens sent off. I know Dichio somewhat elbowed him when they wen tup for the ball, but it was Pickens kicking Dichio from the ground after falling that caused that whole incident. So fire fans should not be pissed at dichio-he aint gonna take shit from your rookie GK.
