On this day in 2008, Ángel Di María scored for Argentina vs. Nigeria in the Olympic gold medal match. The player for any final. 🏅🇦🇷pic.twitter.com/gUsmnDOcAH— Roy Nemer (@RoyNemer) August 23, 2024
That 2008 Olympics squad would have beaten most senior teams at the time. They won all games while being managed by Batista. That pass from Messi was like Maradona pass to Burruchaga.
I think Scaloni could've won World Cups with the 1998, 2002 and 2006 teams. So much talent wasted those years. Our U-20 teams kept spitting out crazy amount of talent and winning Youth World Cups, but the senior teams were being managed by donkeys. Try 6-1 lost to Bolivia. Worst game I've seen since following the team in 90s. The 2010 QF also had one of most ridiculous line up. 5 attackers with no proper midfielders and Otamendi playing in wrong side of tge pitch.
I'll let you guys read and dissect this as you please. I had to laugh at it. Especially with his opinion about Aimar. These Spanish Madrista's are really something. What did spain accomplish by 2002? https://imgur.com/a/1BurX0F
They won three EUROs and a WC in the last 16 years, which makes them the most successful NT this century. On another note, happy birthday at 62 to Jorge Burruchaga, scorer of Argentina's winner in the 1986 World Cup final. I doubt anyone who watched that goal live will forget it!
guardian article straight from 18.5 years ago https://www.theguardian.com/football/worldcup2006blog/2006/jun/30/argentinablowitwithcrazys "Jose Pekerman sabotaged his own side, and that's why they lost to Germany" You know how had it was when English journalist wrote it like that lol
Kinda bored without the national team game so I decided to watch the 2014 semifinal, its been many years since I watched the game highlights , usually only watch the shootout... here's Higuain goal being ruled for an offside but what a finish though. Around 12th minute mark, Masche also did a clean tackle on Robben similar to the one he did later in the game. Our defence was so good at the knockout stage in this tournament.
Tata 2015 lineup versus mexico. Trying to play messi as a false 9? with banega, gago and mascherano as midfielders. All three were more close to defensive mids. Tata Martino really was something back then.
Scaloneta very early days - nov 2018 This one happened a few days later. It has Lamela and Icardi starting. Interesting combo If I'm correct that's 4 games under Scaloni vs Mexico and Argentina has 10 - 0 score line.
Since beating them in Copa 1993 final, Argentina has beaten Mexico 12 more times and losing just once. What a rivalry that is. At the same period of time, Mexico has beaten Brazil 8 times. Also, in last 50 years, Chile has only beaten Argentina 3 times and off course somehow two of those were in CA finals after goalless games.
It wasn't offside. As an instinctive striker he was very good Higuain. But give him time to think he panics. Batigol never panicked. He scored several goals taking it around the keeper.
When we beat Germany and Spain in friendlies, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper and scored. He did it aswell against Mexico in 2014 round 16. However, he always mess it up in finals , that's his main issue. You could tell his brain freezed in that chance vs Chile. He wasnt sure to chip the ball or to round the goalie. Even that chance in 2015 final, some might blame the bad pass, yet Bati scored from the same exact angle in Copa 1991.
