El Burrito was magic. He was as skilled as any great 10 of his era, but his inner demons got the best of him. The drinking and the partying took his prime away. Ortega is basically the Argentinean version of Ronaldinho.
Can someone give me an analysis and synopsis on your take of the 1995 Copa America. I just want more details about that tournament, because I don't know much about it.
I didnt watch it at the time but I do know that Brazil scored two hand goal , againts Argentina in QF & againts Uruguay in final. You can see it on YT. Amazingly Brazil also scored hand goal in WC 2010.
Does anyone notice how Valdano's goal in 1986 final was actually similar to ADM goal in 2022 final? it started from the back all the way to the goal in one sweeping move. Maradona two touches pass was the key moment there.
Our coaches and afa never did take advantage of prime Aguero, dybala, lamela, lanzini and icardi did they.
This aerial angle shows how difficult Messi's goal against Mexico in WC 2022. Its crazy he did that under biggest preasure... a possibility of getting knocked out at group stage.
On this same day — 06/24/2006 When Maxi Rodriguez scored one of the all-time great World Cup goals in extra time against Mexico. 😱pic.twitter.com/Es2axvX0pu— Football Tweet ⚽ (@Football__Tweet) January 3, 2024 wow, it’s been 18 years already.. crazy And to think this all-time goal would have never happened if the ref didn’t incorrectly invalidate Messi’s 92nd minute goal. Thank god there was no VAR!
Maradona reminds the world of his brilliance as Argentina knock Brazil out of the 1990 World Cup. Caniggia with the finish pic.twitter.com/17YjJTB18x— @forgottengoals (@forgottengoals) August 20, 2017 Also on this date. As well as Messi's birthday. 6/24 is just a great day for Argentine football.
As a captain, Maradona has victories over Brazil, Germany, Italy, Uruguay, England & Belgium at WC knockout stage.
I wish in the late 90s, we sent better sides to the CA. It was always a mix of the first and second team players with the likes of Bati sitting out. Perhaps had they won, the pressure wouldn’t have grown for the future generations. Also, it was 1997, a year before the Mundial and we fielded a second side, whereas the brazucas took a much fuller team. This could’ve helped us get ready for France 98.
True but at that point we just won back to back Copa in 91 & 93, so maybe the NT just didnt see Copa as very important tournament. 95 we lost due to Brazil hand goal (which they did again vs Uruguay in final). We didnt win Copa in 70s & 80s but the WC titles must have made the Copa feels less prestigious. Even between 1986-1990, we lost two Copa but made it to WC final again. I'd say the 2002 group stage exit coupled with losing 2004 final on penalties was the real begining of the curse. Looking at our 80s-90s players photos , they all looked like 35-40 year old, just like Cuti lol.
1998 WC QF v the Netherlands. Don't know how we lost this one. Batigol hit the post, Ortega hit the post, der Saar fell over like a tree to get Ortega off (although Ariel should not have retaliated). Another great opportunity wasted.
1998 WC Round of 16 v England at St.Etienne. A hard earned win in which the side made heavy weather and barely utilized the man advantage for 70 minutes.
Redondo would have dominate the midfield. Caniggia speed as a sub could be useful aswell, but.. oh well Its funny England still piss about Diego's hand while Owen blatantly dive in both 1998 & 2002 to earned those penalties.
Technically, Scaloni has helped us win 5 trophies. De Paul looks a bit silly without his beard. No wonder he decided to keep it.
The craziest part of this pic, Dibu was third choice goalie Paredes & RDP looks better with beard Technically, Scaloni did won 5 trophies He won u20 WC as player
Rene Houseman. Would have been his birthday yesterday but for his premature passing in 2018. Houseman was top scorer for Argentina at the 74 World Cup and played in 1978. He may be of English descent or German (Haussmann) but he was very much a product of the Argentine style to pass and move and to trick opponents with flashes of skill, speed and the dribble. At which he was a master of all three. He is associated with Huracan founded in 1908 at the time when Jorge Newbery son of an American immigrant dentist was pioneering aviation in Argentina flying balloons. He sadly like his elder brother perished in an aviation accident but the club Huracan and their crest features his balloon the Huracan which he flew to Uruguay and Brazil. Huracan reached the peak of their success under the late Cesar Menotti winning the domestic title and made it into the then grouped semi finals losing to eventual winners Independiente. The team was marked by a desire to play free flowing attacking football marked by individual flair to entertain one and all. The style is evident in the play of Osvaldo Ardiles who played for Huracan before his move to Tottenham. Hector Baley the last black player for the seleccion also played at the time for Huracan. Houseman is without doubt a legend and would be in contention for the all time seleccion group. Others in that category are Omar Corbatta and of course Angel di Maria. Sadly like Corbatta Houseman had a drinking problem from an early age which contributed to his early passing. And like Corbatta sometimes played while under the influence. Like many other great players from Messi to Cruyff to Best all the little Rene did was to kick a ball against a wall for hours honing his ball control.
Right now, nothing comes to mind. Gondou is an out and out striker but he's average at best. And to be fair, I can't think of many out and out strikers that came out of Argentina that actually playing at a very high level. Icardi was more or less a product of the Canary Islands. He then went onto Barcelona's youth program then to Sampdoria and Inter. Fatso, perhaps? It's been a minute to be fair. I remember back in the day, the media and whatnot were hyping up Palermo. But he was never at that high level, no matter what the media or Bosteros said so. He also moved to Europe very late and had a freak injury at Villarreal. But he will always be remembered for that match where he missed 3 PK's in a single game. Then there was Cavenaghi. He had promise and I do remember the debate was Who was better, Tevez or Cavenaghi? Well, Cavenaghi derailed his career by taking money and going to Russia. He had some good years in France and retired fairly young. Lucho Figueroa was actually a decent striker, he did well for Central and in Mexico. Then he got a serious injury, which derailed his career. He probably would've gone to the 06 World Cup instead of Palacio. Diego Milito really had a great moment for us. He played behind Crespo for a time period then had to be behind Palermo in 2010 when he was one of the best forwards in the world. Man, just thinking back at these players...
