Especially since the mlsnet switchover (loss of 2004 press releases) and probably due to some vagueness from MLS, I'd like some help figuring out how teams bring in players outside of the draft. We know for sure about allocations, discoveries (whatever rules this goes by), and returning MLS player/USMNT player dispersal drafts, loterry drafts. Teams can trade, claim off waivers of course. What I'm mostly wondering about is the "loan". These players don't seem to be listed as DISC on mlsnet rosters. Saragosa in LA. Gilberto for MET. Testo for CLB (though I think I read he took a discovery selection). Peguerro for COL I believe was a loan. Looking at new players this year: Jordan CLB according to CLB dispatch went through a dispersal draft (like Hejduk, Moore, and ?Walker last year). Szeteka -> lottery draft. Testo CLB, Saragosa LA, Peguerro COL - ?loans, possible discoveries. Herdsman CLB - trade for rights. Kirovski, Gibbs - allocations. Delgado - presumed discovery (COL trade DC right after for DISC selection) de la Torre, Castellanos (now waived) - never heard for sure. Herzog - discovery? but now not listed as DISC on mlsnet. Discoveries for developmental players are unlimited, MLSNET is inconsistent in listing them. Thompson & Belleh NE, Roberts KC, Flores MET, Cila COL, Erush COL MLSNET listed DISC - John NE, Baker NE, Brenes MET, Taylor MET, Rasovic KC, Valakari DAL, Kuffour (though also listed TI and is roster protected), Scott CLB, Martinez COL I've asked before; it seems DEV discoveries (Perkins) that get promoted to the senior roster (even the same year) don't count now or ever against discovery limits. So any player 23 or under can be added without counting against the discovery limit theoretically by being first added DEV and then immediately promoted (thus possibly explaining Saragosa, Peguerro, Testo). So the status of the following players (DISC or loan?) are my biggest questions Herzog, Saragosa, de la Torre, Castellanos, Testo, Peguerro. Herzog was announced as a discovery in the LA press release but not listed now. The COL press release makes no mention of a discovery use for Castellanos, Peguerro, and de la Torre and they're not counted as one on MLSNET (though the site now doesn't include COL and NE team sites and may not be as up to date on these teams). Saragosa was called a loan only. By COL having to trade for DISC picks for the two cubans I'd guess two of the 3 were DISC's (Castellanos and de la Torre). By being 23 and under Testo, Saragosa, and Peguerro may not matter if they're DISC or not (though again I read that Testo http://scn.matchnight.com/scn-show.cfm?article=711 was DISC maybe since he did cost a transfer fee). Sorry for the disorganization here, but I want to figure this out in a main forum since team by team I haven't settled this issue in the subforums. The new expansion rules state teams have 2 discoveries per year (the rumors out of CLB and elsewhere about 3 probably were wrong). So settling this all may allow us to figure out which teams have remaining discovery selections. Of course some may have selections but no $$$ remaining having used it up over the past few years. My guess, CHI 1, CLB 0 (counting Testo), DC 1 (not counting Perkins), MET 0, NE 0, COL 0, DAL 1, KC 1, LA 1 (?not counting Saragosa), SJ 2.
