I've never been to Miami and I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas on places to stay that wouldn't be to far from the Orange Bowl? Also does anyone know how old you have to be to rent a car?

I think you have to be 25 to rent a car. As far as staying at a place close to the OB, you're better off driving a little bit longer. The OB is in a terrible neighborhood (as pretty much all of Miami). I'd suggest Fort Lauderdale and then drive the extra 20 minutes down I-95 from there.

Ok, I have no idea whether Miami Beach is actually close to the Orange Bowl, but personally I like hostels, because they're a great way to save money and meet people - especially folks from abroad.
Chances are, you might meet some Argies and have fun talking a little smack with them. Plus, if you make friends, they might share food - Argies make a mean barbecue.

I would stay in South Beach. It's about 15-20 minutes east of the Orange Bowl. South Beach is known for it's Art Deco building's, and night clubs. You have to be 21 yrs. old and have a credit card to rent a car in Fl.

no, i am 99% sure here in FL it is 25 to rent a car. and i would not stay right near the orange bowl either, nice hotels will be in the South Beach area and it is somewhat close. n btw the comment about most of Miami being bad is not true man. just a lot of the places arent the best or most fun for tourists.

You forgot the smiley face because you have to be kidding. Stay in Ft. Lauderdale? Have you heard of South Beach?

But then you have to put up with all the bars, clubs, the beach and beautiful women!

Having lived in South Beach for a year, I can tell you it's a great place to stay for a weekend, if not to llive in.
SoBe hotels can be relatively cheap, but be careful since not all hotels have parking, especially on Ocean or Collins.

There are just as many bars, clubs and hotties in Lauderdale, trust me!! Too much attitude down there. Although, I must say I didn't realize that the hotel prices were reasonable down there.

But mostly I was saying that from a traffic standpoint. Everytime I go down there, it's always bumper to bumper and I have to dodge potential accident after accident. I live down here, so it drives me nuts, but for a weekend, I guess one could brave it. :D

The Orange Bowl is NOT in a terrible neighborhood. By that I mean that you shouldn't expect to get mugged while you're tailgating. Yes, the area is poor, but I really wouldn't have any fear walking the area.

HOWEVER, there are BAD neighboorhoods fairly close to the Orange-Bowl. Especially just east of I-95... so I wouldn't go "exploring" unless you knew exactly where you were going.

Agreed....but South Beach is much closer :D

Also, you're right about the traffic and driving habits. Drive with caution when visiting South Florida!

Maybe the mod can merge the thread I started, Miami Travel Tips, into this one. There are two outstanding youth hostels-actually old hotels with many private rooms with private bath-in South Beach.

    Penguin Hotel

The Penguin is also home to the best [somewhat] cheap breakfast in South Beach. It's a great side walk cafe...

I live on Miami Beach, let me know if you need any advise on where to stay/ go...
