Have the lists that MLS used to do showing each penalty kick taken in a season disappeared? Is this just another benefit of moving to Elias, or am I just not finding it? If anyone saved the old ones and has them, it would be useful. I'd like to see who the best and worst are, because I'm thinking that Razov's 14 for 18 career ain't the worst in the league like some people are knee-jerking.
I'm not sure of what you're asking here, Kenn. The yearly PK lists are available under "League Leaders" (select year). PK goals/attempts are also listed along with blocks, game winning goals, etc. in each team's yearly stats. But, I think I can answer your question anyway. Not counting this year, these are the shooting percentages of all players with more than 10 attempts (I think): Code: Valderrama, C 7 12 0.583 Diallo, Mamadou 7 12 0.583 Harris, Wolde 6 10 0.600 Cienfuegos, M 10 15 0.667 Stoitchkov, H 7 10 0.700 Moreno, Jaime 16 22 0.727 Preki... 23 30 0.767 Vanney, Greg 10 13 0.769 Lassiter, Roy 9 11 0.818 Ruiz, Carlos 10 12 0.833 Mcbride, Brian 11 13 0.846 Razov, Ante 11 13 0.846 Diaz Arce, Raul 13 15 0.867 Spencer, John 9 10 0.900
I found 'em. Duplicating your research before having seen the post, here's what I found and posted in the Fire forum where people were losing their minds: It's very late, so forgive me if there's an error in math or in compilation somewhere, but this should be the list of all-time regular-season penalty kick percentages for all MLS players from 1996 through tonight, minimum 8 attempts: Minimum 8 attempts Player.......Team(s)........Year......PK/A....Pct. Rodriguez....Dallas........1996-2002..8-8....1.000 Spencer......Colorado......2001-2003..9-10...0.900 Diaz Arce....DC-NE-TB......1996-2001..13-15..0.867 McBride......Columbus......1996-2003..11-13..0.846 Ruiz.........Los Angeles...2002-2004..11-13..0.846 Lassiter.....TB-DC-Mia-KC..1996-2003..9-11...0.818 Razov........Chicago.......1999-2004..12-15..0.800 Vanney.......Los Angeles...1999-2001..10-13..0.769 Preki........KC-Miami......1996-2003..23-30..0.767 Moreno.......DC-Metros.....1997-2003..16-22..0.727 Stoitchkov...Chi-DC........2000-2003..7-10...0.700 Cienfuegos...Los Angeles...1996-2002..10-15..0.667 Kreis........Dallas........1997-2003..6-9....0.667 Harris.......Col-NE........1997-2002..6-10...0.600 Diallo.......TB-Metros.....2000-2002..7-12...0.583 Valderrama...TB-Miami......1996-2001..7-12...0.583 All-time league percentages, again through tonight, and again, it's too late at night to be 100% sure of their accuracy: 1996....44-50...0.880 1997....37-54...0.685 1998....36-59...0.610 1999....25-41...0.610 2000....48-66...0.727 2001....37-52...0.712 2002....33-47...0.702 2003....47-58...0.810 2004....15-18...0.833 Total..322-445..0.724 I'm thinking that if the league average over time is 72% and only two guys who've taken 8 or more are at 90% or above, the 90% figure is a touch high. Here's the individual list at 6 attempts: Minimum 6 attempts Player.......Team(s)........Year......PK/A....Pct. Rodriguez....Dallas........1996-2002..8-8....1.000 Cunningham...Columbus......1999-2004..7-7....1.000 Wynalda......SJ-Chicago....1996-2001..6-6....1.000 Spencer......Colorado......2001-2003..9-10...0.900 Diaz Arce....DC-NE-TB......1996-2001..13-15..0.867 Etcheverry...DC United.....2000-2003..6-7....0.857 Moore........New England...1996-1999..6-7....0.857 McBride......Columbus......1996-2003..11-13..0.846 Ruiz.........Los Angeles...2002-2004..11-13..0.846 Lassiter.....TB-DC-Mia-KC..1996-2003..9-11...0.818 Razov........Chicago.......1999-2004..12-15..0.800 Cerritos.....SJ-Dal-DC.....1998-2003..7-9....0.778 Vanney.......Los Angeles...1999-2001..10-13..0.769 Preki........KC-Miami......1996-2003..23-30..0.767 Moreno.......DC-Metros.....1997-2003..16-22..0.727 Kubik........Chicago.......1998-1999..5-7....0.714 Stoitchkov...Chi-DC........2000-2003..7-10...0.700 Cienfuegos...Los Angeles...1996-2002..10-15..0.667 Kreis........Dallas........1997-2003..6-9....0.667 Bravo........SJ/Colorado...1996-2000..4-6....0.667 Harris.......Col-NE........1997-2002..6-10...0.600 Diallo.......TB-Metros.....2000-2002..7-12...0.583 Valderrama...TB-Miami......1996-2001..7-12...0.583 Valderrama was pretty bad. If they didn't allow Canadian keepers in MLS, Razov's percentage would be even better.
Is there a story we should know about here? I took my first peek at this season's stats, and very quickly noticed that there seem to be some errors, e.g. Troy Perkins' PK save wasn't there, and David Castellanos was missing completely.
I liked the old stats in text format, not tables. Just made them slightly easier to bring into excel. I imagine you could still do it, it's just another step.
Perkins didn't save Twellman's PK. It hit the post, and I read that Perkins himself said he never touched the ball.
I'd read that on the boards as well, but didn't actualy see him say it or never saw him quoted. Welcome to the boards.
Good to know the PK was missed, but just for the record, Perkins is listed with 0 PK attempts against ... so there's still an error.
Dave Johnson and Rongen discussed it on a local telecast on Comcast the week after the play happened. I was surprised too. It looked like a save when it happened but apparently not.
Perkins definitely didn't get a touch to the ball. But if it had been inside the post, he would have.
Just a bit of playing around with the numbers, again using an historical distribution of penalty takers records & each individual players actual success/failure figure. Try looking at the adjusted figures thus. Two players take their first ever MLS penalty, one scores, one misses. Therefore one has a 100% record & the other has a zero percent record. Rather than give them these highly misleading percentages or worst still omit them all together, the adjusted figure makes the 1-0 record most likely to be slightly better than an average MLS penalty taker(actual percentage is around 74%) & it makes the 0-1 record slightly worse than an MLS average taker (around 70%). As they take more penalties of course the extra info gleaned will add to our evaluation of their most likely penalty taking ability. At the very least it rates a 8-8 taker in front of a 6-6 taker, which, ignoring the ability of the keepers faced is surely correct. Player.............PK/A....Pct.............Adj %.
