Did anyone else feel that the piped in music pre-game actually hurt the atmosphere of the game? It was very hard to hear the SoBs from the other side of the stadium and I think (and those around me agreed) that organic noise would have been much better than another round of Miley Cyrus/Q102 songs.

I agree completely. The atmosphere got way better once they turned all that garbage off.

OK - you just put your finger on the one thing that really bothered me about the new stadium. The pre-game speakers were WAY too load and we could not hear the live songs and chants coming from the River Enders. And then - I DO NOT want to hear piped in chanting after every Union goal!!! We can celebrate without the help of canned chanting thank you.

A lot of the piped in noise is tied to advertising on the screen. I don't like it either, but I recognize that the advertising helps support the team, and I appreciate that unlike some places they do turn it off during the game.

Doop Doop Doop was Novak's request. I was a little surprised by the canned version, as I seem to remember an early conversation when it first came up about having the SOB Capo lead it. People were at least singing along, but I'd vote for letting the SOBs lead.

And per Nowak's request, the little German club he played for who also used Doop for the post-goal celebration pipes it in. Not uncommon throughout Europe or other sports in the States for that matter, and frankly I think it really helps the non-River Enders get into the song better ... unlike 4LC which didn't come off as planned.

I have no problem with the Doop. I couldn't hear it from the River End, but like you said, if it helps the rest of the 18,500+ get into it, then I'm all for it.

Still not a fan of trying to do this mid-game. IIRC, at the time we started singing it was a Union FK in the attacking third, which might have explained the disunity. I just think it doesn't take into consideration the possibility that something else might be going on at the time, like a FK, PK, goal, etc, which might require something different (whether it be organized or just raw noise from the River End). I understand the meaning of 20:10 and all that, I just think that it might be forcing the issue to try to do this at that time every game.

My two cents, and I understand that not everyone agrees with that point of view

It didn't bother me until the SOBs marched into the River End, although it was a bit too loud for me. A good rule of thumb, to me, would be the music stops once the SOBs start singing. It could improve the atmosphere and help people learn what's going on, particularly the more removed they are from RE. Doop post goal is fine and I hope to hear it often. :)

Being far away and all, I wasn't there. But I got the impression from watching it on TV that the piped in Doop Doop after the goals helped non-SoB types of fans get into it as well (especially when viewing the people's YouTube videos from various parts of the stadium).

I don't see much of a problem with it--they pipe it in here and seems to work just fine:

Don't forget that many, if not most, fans will be walking around the stadium innards up to 5 minutes before kickoff and piped-in music really adds to the experience. Whether they can separate sound near the vendors from that broadcast in the stadium is the question.

They will probably have to play the Doop song all season after a goal. In 109 we could hardly hear it over the cheering. We definitely would not have been able to hear the SoBs singing it alone. Once everyone knows it, then they can quit the recording.

I've been to Dutch games where the players were introduced with the Alan Parsons Project, so it's not "impure" to play music over the stadium speakers.

This. I think playing Doop over the speakers is the right call for now. Without that, most of the stadium wouldn't hear the SOBs singing it (with everyone cheering after a goal) and it wouldn't catch on. If they consistently play it over the speakers for most/all of the season, the regular folks will pick it up and sing it on their own without the cue. And then they can stop playing it.

Now, whether that time is later this season or in 2011, I don't know. But for now, I think that's okay.

Overall, I was pretty impressed by how little they used the overhead speaker. They made key gameplay related announcements and only played songs when there was no action on the field (except Doop), which is how it should be.

As somebody not sitting in the River End, I can say with certainty that the only way you're going to get the whole stadium to join in on Doop is to play it over the PA. And I mean permanently. Otherwise it will die off. And I would hate to see that because it's great, plus it sounds great on TV when it's the crowd in unison with the actual song.

    two things:
    1) Nowak never played for the the team that uses that
2)The team that uses that is probably the 2nd most successful club in German history. don't know if you'd call that "small"

my suggestion: after the goal, give the crowd some time to cheer, get the announcement in quick, and THEN go into the DOOP

Just to give some local context, the Eags still cue up the 1-2-3 plus Lyrics for "Fly Eagles, Fly" after the extra point, and I have no prob with that. I think they should give a second to cheer for the goal, then cue up the doop, similar to Hockey goal songs. Then do the announcement after.

I also loved the post game sticking to the union they pumped in, that was great. The FO sure seems to get some things.

The DOOP song being pumped in is fine after goals.

I am speaking directly about the pre-game music. It really seemed out of place and seemed to hurt any efforts for the SoBs to get any chants/songs going.

Has anyone thought, since we're near the River, about sounding a ship horn after every Union goal? I know it's not hockey, but could add to the excitement of the moment.

I've been to games in England, Germany, and Denmark and they played music in the stadium before games and after goals at every game there too. This is not a big deal.

Speaking of same page, what version of "Union Maid" is played at the end of the game? Is it Woody Guthrie's version?

I'm a big fan of 'Old Crow Medicine Show's' version myself... but I think in one of these posts someone posted the video of the song they played at the end of the game and it wasn't union maid at all... but very close

To the OP: Yes, I found it to be a bit loud and mentioned it in the survey. But I don't fault them as I told them that I wish all arenas could turn the volume down by 20% or so.

That's not going to happen. MLS public-announcements inside the stadiums seem to occur about 10x slower than they do in Europe or even at the WC (and I really do not know why).

Yeah I find that interesting. It seems overseas that they announce the goal scorer almost instantly.

I think that Gladbach video earlier in the thread does it right (crowd cheer, cue music after a few seconds, cut to announcement).

Not that I want to totally clip Gladbach's shtick, but the call and response on the game score and the scorer's name (with the crowd doing the last name) are really cool. Plus it would be hilarious if our PA announcer (who sounds pretty straight-laced) started up the a capella "Doop" chant like their guy does.

The song is from the 1970's rock group, "The Strawbs." We have a post about it, with lyrics, at www.phillysongs.net, if you're interested. It is not Guthrie's version, but riffs on it a bit.
