IMO central defense is our weakest spot, and it ain’t close. Not close. I think you’d have to go back to the previous millennium to find a weaker group.

So it’s like left back was for about 20 years…it’s a low bar.

  2. I think he's Champions League quality, hence PSV and Ajax are looking at him.
I suppose Feyenoord let him go on ground of doubt about his physical durability, as quality wise he is up to the standards for CL matches.
No indications he's being probed for the US?
If he fills a weak spot, it would be an error to not actively trying to persuade him.
Berhalter could just show him a list of our central defenders to try to convince him to join.
I made a joke in the Dutch forum we could put on the pitch 11 central defenders ranging from superstars to world class players.
One guy, de Vrij, was voted by press and fans in Italy as the best defender of Serie A iirc 2 years ago, but isnot a regular in the selection.
It's ridiculous, as in most other countries he would be a given in the selection.
So that's the kind of competition Sandler faces for a CD spot.
Not great if you want to play in a World Cup.

There is question of his eligibility on Twitter. I know there was a Dutch article posted early in this thread, but have we ever had any additional confirmation of his US eligibility?

The 1st post in the thread links to an article that said he has an American mother. Entirely possible that she didn't live in the US long enough to pass on citizenship (though it's odd she is described as "American" if she grew up elsewhere).

Sounds like someone from USSF confirmed he's isn't eligible.

This tweet never made it into this thread. Seems USSF has confirmed he isn't eligible (whether that's eligible for US passport or FIFA eligible to play for the US isn't clear):

    @bshredder

Can we confirm Sandler isn't eligible for USMNT?

Bump - any chance Sandler can get citizenship by next summer? Haha.

Philippe Sandler with an goal and assist today

  9. Oh fok,
Philippe Sandler misses NEC's cracker against PSV and may be out for a longer period of time.
NEC has had to swallow a huge setback in the run-up to the cracker at home against PSV. Philippe Sandler has been injured on training. It is feared that the defender will be out for a while.

He's back in action, subbing on in the 74th minute of a 1-1 draw with Go Ahead Eagles.

And earned himself another week off.
