Sandler starting the cup semifinal against Cambuur (Anello on the bench). Exciting to be the favorite to make a cup final. Sandler didn't make the US 60-man preliminary roster, so one side or the other still ain't interested. But he's the best US-eligible player in the Netherlands not on the roster.

Cup finalists NEC return to Eredivisie action with Sandler again starting, facing last place deeply relegation endangered Volendam (Zach Booth also starting).

Sandler plays all of a 2-0 win over Heerenveen. Didn't rack up many defensive stats, but the overall team stats and possession were pretty even, so not too clear how to read that. I'll go with nice shutout over anything else, I guess.

Sandler starts vs Fortuna Sittard. Naturally, they are getting crushed in the stats, though scoreless, just days after ending the PSV unbeaten run.

  9. Several former Feyenoord players warn for NEC coming Sunday in the Final.
    https://www.feyenoordpings.nl/roy-makaay-waarschuwt-feyenoord-ik-vind-het-bijzonder-knap/
Makaay knows what it's like to play and win a cup final. In 2008, he did so on behalf of Feyenoord. "On behalf of Bayern Munich and Deportivo La Coruña, I have also played and won a cup final three times in total. The fact that I still know that says everything about its impact. Cup finals are just always great to be able to play."

Van Hanegem also mentions that the Nijmegen team has a good team and should not be underestimated. "That has a nice team and is certainly not without a chance. Think of PEC, which Ajax once rolled up in the final. Or FC Utrecht, who beat Feyenoord in De Kuip by a large margin. NEC is a cunning opponent, they can surprise," concludes De Kromme

  10. Facts around the Final:
Sunday, 18.00 hrs, De Kuip, Rotterdam: FEYENOORD - NEC - - Referee: Gözübüyük
    - Feyenoord have won the cup 13 times, most recently in 2018. In 2020 (corona), the final against FC Utrecht was canceled. NEC played 4 finals and lost them all. No club has reached the final so many times without winning the cup.
    - Last season, Feyenoord-NEC in the eighth finals was a spectacle. After 90 minutes it was 3-3 and after 120 minutes 4-4. Feyenoord then won the penalty shootout 5-3.
    - Feyenoord-NEC (1st division) was also the final in 1994. Feyenoord won 2-1
    - In the league, NEC picked up a point in De Kuip: 2-2. The return is in May.
    - Iranian Jahanbakhsh (Feyenoord) made his move to NEC in August 2013. Eredivisie debut. The striker scored 17 times in 55 league matches. Verdonk (NEC) is the opposite case and Sandler (as a substitute in 2 matches in the Eredivisie) also wore the red and white.
    - At Feyenoord, Trauner and Bijlow are fit, but Wellenreuther is in the goal in the final. Hartman is injured.
    - NEC goalkeeper Cillessen won 2 cups with FC Barcelona. Schöne (NEC) won the cup with Ajax against Willem II in 2019. Wellenreuther (F) was the goalkeeper for Willem II.

  11. Personal fun fact.
The husband of one of my nieces (cousins?) lost with NEC the Cup Final against Roda JC.

  13. Special guests for NEC coach Rogier Meijer in "de Kuip".
His brother Rams Meijer with his daughter are over from North Carolina. His brother has never been in "de Kuip", obviously his daughter neither, so they're in for an experience.

  14. Most likely line up of the teams. Feyenoord's Wieffer a doubt case after getting injured during training:

  15. In the cup final Sandler was almost flawless, defensively, long passes and rushes up the pitch.
It made Feyenoord icon make this remark.
Column Willem van Hanegem | If I were Feyenoord, I'd think again about bringing back Philippe Sandler.
Several commentators around the cup final can't think Sandler isnot going to make a transfer this summer.
Feyenoord, PSV and Ajax are in need for reinforcement of the central defense!

I can think of one other team that could use another central defender...

  17. Shit,
    Hamstring injury

NEC have to fear long absence Philippe Sandler: defender suffers hamstring injury NEC must fear a long-term absence of Philippe Sandler. The defender has suffered a hamstring injury against AZ (0-3 loss) and further examination must show how serious the damage is.
    Jeroen Bijma 28-04-24, 20:30 Last update: 21:44

He's being eyed by PSV and Ajax for next season. This is shit. He left Feyenoord for being physically too vulnerable in the high intensity play of Slot football.

Depends on how severe the injury is. If it's a tear, this season - which is almost over anyway - is done and he will likely miss much of next season's winter round.

A strain OTOH means his holidays start early.

  19. Rumors about Ajax and PSV getting stronger, especially since PSV director Brandts on tv called him an interesting player in relation to possible signings this summer.
I dunno if Berhalter looks at him, but if he joins PSV, what would that mean for him as being seen as a prospect for the USMNT?
The Orange Squad can fill a whole team with central defenders, ranging from superstars to world class, so for Philippe to have a go at WC football, in an Orange shirt isnot going to happen, but for the USA...?
