Two days. 20th, a Sunday, and the 25th, a Thursday. I went out for lunch and when I came back there was an im left for me and that's what it said. I almost missed the scoop! That 35 year old thing isn't right. Didn't they play the Soviet Union here in 90 or 89?

    :p

Guess the Jints (or the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets! ?) didn't want the women to outdraw them again like they did for the opener in '99. :D

*does the Larry/Balki 'Perfect Strangers' Dance of Joy* :=D

Actually, I know they played Dnipro from the Ukraine. Okay. Then 35 years is a long time then. I thought it was them and somebody else as well.

Team USA WILL be here...book it!

Mike Jensen of the Inquirer has this story on its website:

"Lincoln Financial Field was chosen today as one of six stadiums that will host Women's World Cup games this fall.

"Philadelphia became the final choice after the NFL's New York Giants vigorously objected to the use of Giants Stadium. Philadelphia is likely to host the first doubleheader of the tournament on Sept. 20 that will not include the U.S. women's national team. But the American team will come to town the next week for a first-round game.

"Lincoln Financial Field, the new home for the Philadelphia Eagles, is scheduled to open late this summer with another soccer game: Manchester United of England's Premiere League will meet Spain's FC Barcelona on Aug. 3 in one of four exhibition games that Manchester will play in the U.S. this fall. That game was an immediate sellout.

"The city wasn't a frontrunner and as late as yesterday wasn't necessarily going to get any games because it doesn't have a Major League Soccer franchise, and the MLS ownership group holds the U.S. television rights to the Women's World Cup."

For anyone interested, the 6:30 p.m. CSN SportsNite had a short mention, including a nice interview with Lurie, with "much more on this story tonight on the 10:00 p.m. SportsNite".

OH THE HUMANITY! OH THE OUTRAGE!

    :D

"I am frustrated, disappointed and very angry," replied George Zoffinger, chief executive of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. "To have the women's World Cup [with] the premier venue in the Northeast not involved is a travesty."

But Georgie, it is in the Northeast's premier venue now :D .

Blame Jim Fossell and Wellington Mara of the NY Giants for screwing the NJSEA out of a few million dollars of income. But you're more than welcome to drop by here to take a look at what might have been, and we'll be getting the USWNT here on the week of my birthday...

Turns out the Phillies were a pain in the ass on this (then again, when you win only one championship in 120+ odd years, you're not good for much else):

20th is a Saturday. My error. The Saturday being the opening day appears to be the thinking for now.

Just spoke with the Charge front office, and they said they will be contacting ALL season ticket holders to give us season ticket holders a shot at WWC matches in Philadelphia.

    Thanks a lot, Phillies....

    http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/6104005.htm

"The opening ceremonies and the first U.S. game would have been held at the Eagles' new stadium on Sept. 21, but the date conflicted with the Phillies' fan-appreciation day across the parking lot."

    That no-compete clause sucks...

Let me soothe your wounds by saying this:

RFK can't sell out for the US on a Thursday night.

    Lincoln Field can.

And it's got over 10,000 more seats.

    That make you feel better?

People have to understand for decades Werner Fricker ran the USSF as his personal fiefdom...

All decisions by USSF were his personal decision.

How do you think the USA matches in 1989 and 1991 in Philadelphia happened....he personally decided they'd be played here...

Then there was the coup in USSF leeading up to 1994...Fricker was ousted and the USSF became less a dictatorship...

Power has shifted, and largely due to Bruce Arena, RFK has become a prominent venue.

My opinion is RFK has been over saturated, the novelty of hosting events has worn off and crowds are probably 10-20% less than if the area was more virginal.

I've been going up and down the east coast since the late 80's attending matches.

The BEST overall soccer city is Boston, depth of penetration and general interest is the best.

Since I hit Boston and DC for all the 1994 matches, and 90% of all other matches in BOTH places, Boston gets the edge, although RFK can rock.

I'd rather go to Boston for a match than Rfk...
