No way, no how. I would never go to a game if they were named this. "doesn't sound queer"? No no, I'm sorry but it does...
Barring some extraordinary moves, frankly, I'm wondering if MLS is actually going to expand in '07. All of the current places seem missing something - Seattle, Houston and Philly are places the league wants to be, but no stadium or owner. Toronto is just . . . wierd (sorry - I'm not yet sold on the idea of a Canadian team, and would be real wary of what the player rules would be.) Rochester is a decent possibility, but do they have an owner? What else is out there? There is the guy from New York who wants to look into buying a team, but he said he was interested in either buying an existing franchise and moving it or getting an expansion team in New York...... I'd love for you guys to have a team - after Houston, of course (KC being the closest road trip is a killer), but seem more obstacles than progress at this point. Oh, and on the names? Atoms may have history, but it is bad history.
That Murstein guy said he would've moved KC to SA but that didn't work out. So I'm guessing this guy is willing to get a team anywhere. It'd be a damn shame if he bought out KC, because he seems to be an owner willing to pay an expansion fee for any city. And if you wanna know why MLS wants Seattle and Houston so much, it's because there are reports that those two cities have the highest amount of MLS viewers among non-MLS cities (higher than several MLS cities).
I don't have a link, but I have heard consistently through the years (as in, different articles citing different periods of time) that Houston is the highest non-MLS city. Don't know about Seattle, but it wouldn't surprise me. But Houston, Seattle and Philadelphia have to be three cities the league is desperate to get into in order to be a true national league. 11 cities is fine, but those three are all in the top ten or so markets in the US - any national league basically HAS to have teams there. Unfortunately, both CA and the NY guy seem more interested in moving either SJ or KC rather than buying an expansion team..... The league needs to keep the momentum of adding teams going. (Then again, they have the formula right - SSS plus dedicated owner. W/o that, it isn't a viable venue.)
I've heard Garber and other MLS officials say this on more than one occasion. I don't know where you can find that info.
