"...the trade being discussed would send Jaime Moreno, Eddie Pope and Richie Williams to the New York/Jersey MetroStars for Mike Petke, a first-round pick in the MLS draft next month and a player allocation."

Gee, why don't they just trade away Timmay too, & then since Faria & Petke are gone, all my favorite players will be gone.

Actually I would much prefer to see Petke go than Jolley.

Just say "no". Too much we are giving up here already. RW is slightly better than average def mid at best.

As you might guess, a number of fans on the DC Board are less than enthusiastic about Petke. Personally, I'd prefer Jolley. But the Post reporter (Steven Goff--who has some great sources and usually scoops USSF roster releases) indicates that it is United who has asked for Petke.

Frankly, I think it's a very good deal for United. We'd then have 4 of the top 14 picks in the superdraft, either #1 and #2 or #1 and #5 plus the #11 and #14 we already hold. We'd have 2 allocations (with the cap room to use both on maximum players). Or, trade one to a team required to deal for an allocation if they've been assigned JMM or Stewart (you may be in the same situation--you'll still have 1 allocation left).

As for your guys, if Moreno returns to form (a good bet in my book), he'll be quite a force up front with Mathis--you'll some outstanding combination play. But it will create cap issues as well given the word on Howard's new salary. That would put Moreno, Pope and Howard at the MLS max with Mathis pretty close to it (I'm assuming Balboa is cut or significantly reduced by about 2/3rds). Or, to put it another way--those 4 players are around $1 million of the salary cap (a bit above it actually). That means you've got $600K to fill out the remaining 14 roster spots (an average of around $44K per spot) Add a couple of other players who are definitely not close to the MLS minimum (Andy Williams, Richie Williams, Jolley, Balboa) and you're probably not in a position to use your remaining allocation. However, Bradley has clearly shown his ability to squeeze performance out of waiver, low draft pick, and A-league talent (Vaudreil? Walsh? Curtin?).

Why don't we simply switch uniforms and rename our teams?

This is getting to be some kind of farce.

i'd take petke over jolley, but either one is fine...

i think one of them has to go...though i'd think petke would have a better shot to make the nats under bradley....

either way...our team doesn't look bad...lot of young and good american talent...

    mathis
wolff (if he does end up coming)
    davis
    pope
    akwari
    williams (consistent at least)
    jolley
    howard
    moore
    lisi

not bad...with bradley in charge...they should play like they give a damn for once....

I've actually thought having Richie Williams for the time we did was a good thing. It was the first time in a long time, if not ever, that we actually had a less porous midfield. And I have always been of the opinion that our defensive problems came from our lack of a strong mid rather than the inabilities of Petke and Co..

i don't mind richie....except for the fact that he's short and goes by "richie"....figures that would have been left behind in 4th grade...

but anyway...just read the wash post piece and the implication that we could give up our second pick is insane....

metros should try and swap the 2nd pick for the 1st pick...so we could get eski....

let bradley groom eski for the nats...not hudson.

Absolutely agreed. We as US Soccer fans tend to victimize Williams because he was Arena's pet, but the fact still remains that he is a better then average MLS midfielder with international experience and plenty of club success.

I don't think that Aleck would be a good fit with the new look Metro on much the same principle that Williams won't be wearing red and black much longer. Certain players just can't fit into a certain system (Carreri in San Jose who is now blossoming in Colorado) and I think Eskandarian is ideal for a Bradley coached team. Too much of an emphasis on taking players on the dribble, slowing down the game. Thats never been the way that the Fire played, choosing rather to swing the ball around, look for openings, cutting from wing to center and vice versa, letting the ball do all the work. Although Alecko is by all accounts a very talented player, he would be better suited to develop elsewhere in a system where he could blossom and flourish.

Well, with Tab retiring, we're short a midget on the roster.

How about we stop trading with DC? They're our arch rivals! Why do we want someone from the arch rival team on OUR team? Sending a fan favorite and team leader to DC is just plain wrong.

This is Nicks ploy to tone down the rhetoric and dilute the lyrics of songs coming out of 101.

Instead of lyrics touting the value of vaseline, we'll be singing "We miss you, Mikey" and the Kotter song ("Welcome Back")

Oh, the shame of it all!

WE HATE YOU PETKE ...WE DO
WE HATE YOU PETKE... WE DO - OH PETKE WE HATE YOU....I LIKE IT! SEEING HIM FAKED OUT OF HIS DC SCUM SHORTS INSTEAD OF METROS WILL BE GREAT! HE WAS ON HIS BACK A NUMBER OF TIMES LAST SEASON WHILE TEAMS WERE SCORING EASY GOALS.

  18. Maybe you victimized him for that reason, but I criticized him for his crap play. He reads the game well, in fact too well, because he gets into position to receive balls and then can't make decent pass to save his life. More offensive threats came to grief with the ball at his feet then I care to count. He is too slow now and can be burned for speed. I will say that he did not play for us like the whining cheapshotting little rat he was when wearing the DC shirt. That is something to be grateful for I suppose.

I hope this turns out to be just another ugly rumor.

No rumor. The only reason the deal has not been announced is that DCU was waiting for Etcheverry to show up at HQ and sign his new contract. Once that happens (and it was supposed to happen wednesday afternoon), the deal will occur. It is: Jaime Moreno, Eddie Pope and Richie Williams for Mike Petke, an allocation (don't know which allocation it is though the paper described it as a "major allocation" so maybe that's your $150K allocation) and the #5 choice in the first round.

I'm convinced that Petke was only in a slump last season. Knowing how this league is with trades, he'll be back in stripes with in a couple of years (ex. Myers, Williams).
Given both teams performance in 2002, trading between DC and Metros is like moving the kids from one yellow short bus to another.

What's really hilarious is the DC supporters' consensus opinion that they're getting Mike Petke only to trade him away somewhere else (to Chicago for Razov, for example) - the delusions truly never stop down in the DC area, do they?

While I find it sad (like most here) that we're going to have to see a long-time Metro like Petke suiting up in their shirt, and it's going to take a while to get used to seeing the DC Three playing for us, thankfully, reality plays a much stronger part in proceedings around this neck of the woods than down there. I can't read minds, but I don't think Ray Hudson is thinking 'trade bait' when he acquires Petke; I guess being as miserable a team as us for just as long is making that 'denial' part of the coping mechanism a real doozy for DC fans to transcend.

    a) i wouldn't call that the consensus opinion of the dc fans

    b) it's not that wild an idea, that some other sucker would take petke off our hands

    c) there's plenty of delusion and other coping mechanisms to go around up and down the east coast of MLS.

  23. Got that right. It is something of a joke. I was more than half serious in my earlier post about not sweating the Petke trade -- he could be back here next season in MLSland.

This is the sad reality of the single entity concept. The players are fungible commodities that get traded around to suit the league. I view this as a necessary evil while the League hopefully establishes itself. Eventually though it has to be abandoned -- Clubs have to be able to make their own decisions and forge some sort of personality that fans can identify with in the process. That just ain't happening now.

I like richie. Moreno and Pope are kinda expensive but there ok. I'm not sure how much Petke dislikes going to DC But if I had to choose between Jolley and Petke, I would rather keep Jolley. Etcheverry wants to go in near Saddam Hussain's playland to sit on the bench with everybody hating him over a few hundred grand? Let him. He already makes to much for what he does.
