I think it would just be a nice challenge for Klinsmann (and for the USMNT as a whole) if he makes it to that tournament for him to undertake. In the USA's 3 appearances (1993, 1995 and 2007), it is literally a roller coaster. In 1993, they fail to get out of the group stage. In 1995, they finished 4th place. In 2007, they fail to get out of the group stage. Who would like to see the US participate again? I think it would really be a serious test against the best national teams of both Americas. I also think the US can stand a chance. The US does have young players who will hopefully have developed and will be ready to have a go. It can really give a good idea to have an early look at who will be a front runner for the 2018 WC. Yes, I know the Gold Cup with the 2017 Confed. Cup spot will be up for grabs but I will be honest. It gets a bit boring to see them play mediocre to ordinary at best teams at times. The CONMEBOL has more parity and the Copa America is a tougher tournament, imo. It's just a random thought. What say you? A poll has been provided for your convenience. It won't be public but if you like then feel free to also state your answer.
Wasn't there some talks about a North/South American tournament? Honestly, i would like to see us keep the Gold Cup and Copa America how it is now...and if we can send a U-23 +5, i would. But i think what we should really advocate for is at the half point of the cycle '12, '16, '20, ...we should push for this tournament. Format: *All CONMEBOL teams qualify. *Top 4 CONMEBOL teams (from Copa America results would be my suggestion) would be seeded. *Top 4 CONCACAF teams (from Gold Cup) would be seeded. *CONCACAF would then send 2 more teams (i would suggest a play-off between the other quarter-finalists in the Gold Cup) So this is a possible scenario if the tournament was to be held held this year: Group A: CONMBEOL seed-Venezuela CONCACAF seed-United States Brazil Jamaica/Guatemala Group B: CONMEBOL seed-Paraguay CONCACAF seed-Honduras Chile Ecuador Group C: CONMEBOL seed-Peru CONCACAF seed-Mexico Argentina Bolivia Group D: CONMEBOL seed-Uruguay CONCACAF seed-Panama Colombia Costa Rica/El Salvador Now, that's a tournament that could rival the Euros.
Why this again? It's a series of glorified friendlies for us. Klinsmann won't even be the coach in 2015
So all that jazz about no coach should be retained more than one cycle that applied to Bradley isn't going to apply to Herr Klinsy?
My conditions... 1) We actually get invited... 2) BS Nation remembers that the 2015 Gold Cup is the qualifier for the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia...and that comes first. After that, I'm all in...
Well after that embarrassing lost to El Tri in the last Gold Cup, I would believe that the USMNT would want some revenge. In any case if we get the invite from Conmebol then I'm all for it, but we have to remember that we will only be guest at this tournament meaning we wouldn't be able to bring our 1st team just some scrubs from MLS which piss Conmebol off again.
I just read an interview they did with Justino Compean, Mexican fed Pres and the vice Pres of Concacaf, where he said the 2015 Copa America will be in Chile and the new Super Copa America will be held in the US. He said it was official. This is great news and this is almost as good for us fans as getting a WC here in the states. Imagine a semifinal of USA vs Brazil and Mexico vs Argentina. These games will fill any stadium they put them on.
Mexico left the the Copa last summer with 0 points. Not to sound like an ass but the U.S. is more likely not to earn a point than to get to the semis. I would absolutely love if this is true though.
Mexico left with no points because they were forced by CONCACAF to field a U23 squad. Costa Rica's that was also forced to field a U23 squad actually beat Bolivia. The USA could get points off South American teams
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. And my comment wasn't that the US couldn't get points. I was responding to the notion of a US/Brazil and Mexico/Argentina semifinals.
What? Really? I mean, don't get me wrong. Either Uruguay or Chile could beat the US any time, but it's silly to think that we couldn't plausibly advance against the South American field (outside of Argentina and Brazil).
Its possible I just don't see it likely that the semifinal match ups work out to be US/Brazil and Argentina/Mexico when you will have teams like Uruguay, Chile, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, and Colombia all of which could also make the semis as well. That exact scenario playing out is very unlikely even if you had CONCACAF trying to rig things to make it happen.
Conflicting articles here http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/9446831.stm http://www.footballcracy.com/news/south-america/mexico-invited-for-the-2015-copa-america/ The first says Japan will be invited since they missed out on the 2011 Copa America due to the Tsunami. The 2nd says that Mexico and a 2nd CONCACAF team will be invited.
What is conflicting? We're talking about the 2016 Copa America in the US, not the 2015 tournament in Chile.
It's an outdated thread title. The 2015 Copa America is in Chile. If the US gets a tournament, it will be for 2016.
It's not about hosting the 2016 Copa America it's about getting invited to the 2015. The rumored 2016 is a different issue
Japan companies are major sponsors to copa American, so I would not be surprised if they are invited, the second concacaf team is probably a back up in case Japan can't go, like Costa Rica in 2011. Edit: The BBC article was right after Japan pulled out of 2011, they were told they would be invited for 2015. Things may have changes since then, maybe Japan does not want to participate in Copa America. The second article reads a little as speculation but since a second Concacaf team has been the invitee since 2001, then they could be right.
A tournament with 12 teams is always sort of awkward. Ideal numbers are 8, 16, 32, etc. It's always a shame that Copa has 3rd place teams make it to the quarters.
