Wrong- he should have done it after his last game and before he was traded to a team he had no intentions of playing for.

Classless ending to a classy MLS career.

So I guess the trade to NE never really happened?

The Fire press release seems to glaze over that fact...

MLS prescedent has the teams getting the player who retired screwed out of the trade.

    See Baicher, Jeff
    See Rammel, Steve

We shall see what happens here.

    You forgot Balboa, Marcelo ;)

BTW - Would Piotr have retired if he hadn't been traded to New England (I know about the salary cap issue, etc. I'm just wondering).

New England and Chicago traded something.

Apparently, New England is getting a conditional first or second round draft pick next year for the conditional pick they passed to Chicago for Peter. The imbalance implies that something else was traded too. I'd speculate that it's the remainder of whatever pay that Novak was owed from last year in this year's salary budget.

So, we traded a first or second round pick for cap space and a late round pick. Nothing new here.

Not exactly the same thing. He did play for the Metros last season, for 10 minutes.... ;)

Sorry to see him retire because he clearly can still play at a high level when healthy. But this guy is total class, and I'm very happy to see him retire in Fire Red. His quotes at retirement were fantastic. Best of luck Piotr!

Wow! It is kind of shady to retire after being traded. Does it make me a bad person for being kind of happy about this?

    Wrong--
He should only have done it after he knew he was going to be traded.

Listen, it's business and they don't always (usually) ask players before they're traded if a trade is acceptable. Is that "classy"? No, but that's the way it is. The only thing you can say about Nowak is that he should have done it sooner after the announcement...

Wizards have had it done to them twice. Eric Dade got traded to us from Dallas. We also had someone from DC come our way but opt not to. (I cant remember who though.) In both cases KC was screwed, but I have heard from others on BS that NE is going to get their picks back.

Puhlease. Wilt and Nowak pulled a fast one it seems. Even if NE gets their pick back, Wilt used this ploy to get Chicago to get under the cap in time and not have to trade another player. I am sure Wilt who has seem to be somewhat of a Class GM over the years let Nowak know about the trade.

    This thing stinks.

Um, NE is getting their pick back, and a high draft pick from us next year...

How exactly is NE getting screwed?

I am glad they are getting their pick back. That's a first from MLS. They were used like a $2 hooker so your team can comply with the Cap. Plus they lost how many weeks in searching for a central midfield player.

I agree with eric d here.

NE had plans set for this season and Nowak was part of them, they coulda spent the past few months or so looking another direction for a playmaker but they were under the impression that Nowak would be their guy. They were hosed. Draft picks are nice fotr next year, sure. They made they trade counting on Nowak contributing THIS year. i don't see how that is hard to understand.

NE knew there was a good chance that nowak would retire that is why they extracted a pound of flesh from the fire in putting in that clause that if he retires they get a first or second round draft choice, basically for forcing nowak to retire or leave his business intrests in chicago. The Revs got a good draft choice basically for nothing. They gave salary cap relief for a month when the teams aren't even playing yet.

    Puhlease think.

Exactly what does Nowak's retirement do for Chicago? Get under the cap? They could've just waived him-- which is essentially what they'll have done if they give the pick back.

Could NE have spent this time looking for other players? Sure-- that sucks, but that's the business. There's no fast one here. I don't see what's so hard about that to understand.

No they couldn't have- the waiver date and the cap compliance date were not the same. They had to trade him or he would count against the cap one way or the other. Then they would have had to trade a more valuable player.

On top of that it's bad bizness. This is not the same as a trade that goes down where one team gets a better player and the other gets a bust.

I am also sure that clause is probably standard these days with older players or younger ones for that matter in MLS. Do you really think the Wevs traded for him just to get a condtionally draft pick back in exchange?

    Keep spinning Fire fans.

Yes, they could have. Just because the waiver date was different (I assume you're talking about the November date) doesn't mean they couldn't have done it.

And don't you think NOwak could've retired at any time? Of course he could've.

It sounds like you're the one trying to spin a story out of nothing.

Maybe so but I don't think the Fire were planning on trading him. Either that or he realized that playing for Steve Nicols he'd be the next Chacon.

So the trade conspired out of thin air. Did Mayor Daley do it?

I don't think daley cares enough about the fire to have gotten involved in this conspiracy. The Revs and fire were in the conspiracy together. The fire had to get rid of nowak because of salary cap problems. The Revs made the trade because they couldn't lose either they got nowak cheap, a 3rd round pick or they got a first or second round pick from the fire if he retired. Nowak had a guarenteed contract he couldn't be waived so the fire knew the only way to force him to retire was make him move. The revs had salary cap room so they gladly joined the conspiracy. This was all thought out in advance no one was totally surprised by the outcome.
