Anyone else hate it when they use this nickname in the media? Come on, this isn't hockey or basketball. It's "US." You don't hear "Team Brazil" or "Team Spain."

No problems with it at all actually.

It is pretty corny, but I understand. "The nats" or "the USMNT" probably wouldn't be understood by casual fans and "U.S. men's national team" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

They call the kids "Team USA" in D2: The Mighty Ducks... so it's OK by me.

    Team America!!!!!!!!

I think most main-stream fans call us "Team USA" that's what we call our basketball team, baseball team, and every other team that competes internationally. Sorry, we're American. We have different sayings than everyone else.

I know what you mean. At first it kind of got on my nervers. They would say "....Team USA faces Slovenia today." And I would cringe and I wondered if anyone else felt the same way. But I thought about it and was like ehhh...why the hell not..TEAM USA B*TCH

They've always kind of marketed the USMNT and the world cup like the olympics which uses phrases like Team USA. I've always noticed that and it's kind of corny, but I don't have a problem with it.

I hate the name too -- sounds hokey. It's the main reason I'd really like to see USMNT supporters adopt and popularize a nickname.

I do like the Yanks, but I realize that's not popular everywhere. I also like the Bison as a good, African style but quintessentially American nickname.

Its fine with me....easy to understand for the people who don't follow the team all the time.

"The Bison?" I don't think we should have a nickname like that. Sounds so....American(In a bad way.) We're the "yanks" or the "stars and stripes" or something like that. I hate it that we have to put an artificial nickname for every sports team out there. I remember the MLS commisioner a while back critisizing DC United for having United and Toronto/Dallas for having FC and suggesting that it be changed to some pre-packaged nickname.

I can't stand it and I cringe every time I hear that. We need to come up with a team nickname ... before the next World Cup. :p

I don't have a problem with Yanks ... Super Eagles is taken ... how about just the plain old Eagles? Freedom Eagles?

Let's give a shout-out to the great American Ben Franklin and call ourselves, "The Turkeys." Or if you're so inclined, "The Super Turkeys."

It would be nice if we had a sport and country specific "nom de plume". The Socceroos are just about perfect in this regard. But there is nothing particularly great that anyone has ever come up with for us, that I've ever seen at least. Certainly nothing as good as, never mind better than, plain ol' reliable "Death to America" in-your-face-and-clobber-us-if-you -can Yanks.
As for "Team USA", the drawback is that it applies to just about any team sport, at any level; from basketball to cricket. But better that than the near absolute nada of 20 years ago.

Team USA is our nickname ( or is it?). Much like Three Lions to England, Azzuri to Italy, Les Blues to France, Selecao to Brazil.....

I always felt that "TEAM USA" was a bit redundant. It makes it sound kind of amateurish. Why do you need to re-emphasize that the United States is a team?? Kind of like saying Independent Golfer Tiger Woods.

On the list of complaints I have regarding the media's coverage of the World Cup, this ranks pretty darn low

I agree with original post. The other day they said TEAM USA and I thought Olympics...hockey ...gymnastics...Dream Team....but not soccer....I dont think TEAM USA fits for soccer. I rather itr be unique.
