I was thinking (yeah, I know) that maybe being a teacher would be the best job for a soccer fan. That way the pesky job wouldn't get in the way of such things as the World Cup and a good chunk of the MLS season.

Then again, if I become a teacher, I probably won't be able to afford attending these games..

Not a bad idea except that MLS starts in April. School goes until mid June. The new schedule has MLS going later into the fall while taking a break in the summer. Last summer I had to excuse Jenna from class so that she could come to the tent for the viewing parties at CCS, so you'd still be stuck teaching during some WC games.

All in all I think you would have to sell Mary Kay in order to control your schedule around soccer. I think the Autumn colors will look best on you ;)

Become a college prof. The school year for them is not as long as high school -- and the kids are more attentive because they (or their parents) are paying tuition.

Also, the college prof does not have to sit in front of the class for 7+ hours a day. I can see a carrer as teach the 2-3 hours, sit in the office for a while, and then cut out early to drink and watch the Crew!!

P.S. Most Associate Professors start out in the low $70k range per school year (higher if you do research during the summer). Sure, you almost have to have a doctorate, but $70k for nine months work isn't bad...

I still say Chris should go for MK's pink Caddy. Think of all the dates he would impress ;) You'd never misplace your car in the CCS parking lot.

the trick is to choose a school that is on the correct calendar (traditional, year-round) .... depending on which league you want to follow. you can also choose schools that have block schedules, etc...my brother is a high school teacher/coach and he gets out of school daily at noon.

also, professor schedules are great...you create you own!

and don't let hang fool you. im dirt poor.

I've actually begun teaching myself, and while it doesn't give me the breaks for the whole season, I can certainly take the three months of summer to enjoy the league, coach, and play. As for Mary Kay, well, I'll let someone else drive those hideous cars for a living...

    Cheers...

I work at a University and one of my friends is an associate professor in marketing. He said his Marketing PhD was easier than his masters in physics. Now he works for a business school teaching one class per semester (one 3 hour evening class twice per week) and travels the rest of the time.

As a prof, you can't just say, well, this the schedule I'd like, thanks, and see you later. The dept. dean usually comes by your office and says, hey buddy, we want you to teach these classes this semester, and oh, you better do it with a smile while I'm pumping your ass, or you're not gonna make tenure.

Sorry, but if you want it as easy as is being said, you need to be a prof in Germany. There you teach 1 class a semester, if you want, and can have your office hours limited to 1 hour a week. I had profs that had 1 class, every other week, and lived about 2 hours from the university. They'd make the commute twice a month... rediculous!

Either that or you're (like me) a graduate assistant being told "this is when you will teach, this is WHAT you will teach, and you will also take X credits and complete X papers and work toward your thesis/dissertation and have a family and serve on committees and then you might have time to go to the occasional free hockey game. Oh, and we'll pay you peanuts."

    :D
