In this week's Peter Hirdt column, http://www.mlsnet.com/content/03/analyze0508.html, he asks who has the record for having assists on 7 consecutive goals in 1999?
I don't think Andy Williams even had 7 assists in all of 1999 let alone 7 in a row. That was the first step in my digging was to find out who had the most assists. I'll give you a hint... Ralston 18 Etcheverry 17 Cienfuegos 17 Kreis 15 Gutierrez 14 Lewis 14 Moreno 13 Valderrama 13 Warzycha 12 It's someone from that list.
I think Williams had his 13 game assist streak in '98. It's almost more important to know who else was on the team than who had the most assists. I think Etch is out because Moreno was on the team too. Ralston might make sense. Kreis used to take every set piece for Dallas. Cienfuegos also wouldn't be a bad choice. I don't think the ball went thru Warzycha enough for him to be the "winner".
The question posted here is the most consecutive assists (as in consecutive goals on which this person assisted) -- not consecutive games in which the person had an assist. Well, you sort of have a point here -- but Ralston played with Valderrama at that time in Tampa Bay. DCU had 4 guys with more than 10 (Olsen & Lassiter had 11 each).
I know, but if you manage to get an assist in 13 straight matches, I bet your streak of assisted goals is pretty long. There is bound to be a correlation in the data. (God, I wish I had a copy of the raw database...)
That is no longer a safe assumption. Last week's answer (Santino Quaranta) was not involved in the featured Soccer Saturday game (NE vs. SJ).
How many straight 1 goal games do you think a team has? Plus, the article clearly states it happened in 1999, not 98.
Ok, the answer is Ralston. He assisted on 7 straight goals (across 4 games) in 1999 while with Tampa Bay. July 3rd v. KC -- assisted on only goal in 2-1 SO loss. July 8th v. SJ -- assisted on both goals in 2-1 win. Jul 22nd v. KC -- assisted on all 3 goals in 4-3 loss. Jul 25th v. COL -- assisted on first goal in 3-2 SO win. Given the current change in awarding secondary assists, it is interesting to note that only 1 of those assists was a secondary -- the first goal of the 7/22 game was secondary. All the others were either awarded a sole assist or he was the primary.
Moreno had points on eight consecutive United goals in three games between 8/25 and 9/4, but he also had an goal in one of the 9/4 game against Dallas And all but one of the assists were primary assists.
