He coached the football team and funded a new library. That's why I liked him.

 

Why?

 

Spanier was so incompetent as President of Penn State that he created free speech zones and let race relations sink to their nadir. I voted for Bush in 2000 based on the rumor that Gore wanted Spanier as Secretary of Education. (I was a Republican in those days.) Paterno created a new library. As someone who likes books and sports, I obviously liked Paterno better than Spanier. That is why.

Indeed. The way in which the protests from Penn Staters singled out those who were raped as children for particular abuse made clear what a cult it was/is.

I mean, for gods sakes, how do you get to "the bad guys in this are the kids who were raped"? But the PSUers did.
