Stuttgart 5-1 Sandhausen FT. Here is how the promotion race looks 2nd Place (promoted): Stuttgart 55 points, +17 GD --------------------------------------------------- 3rd Place (playoff) : Hamburg 54 points, +21 GD --------------------------------------------------- 4th Place (no promo): Heidenheim 52 points, +11 GD Stuttgart's remaining schedule @Nurnberg (15th) Darmstadt (5th) Hamburg's remaining schedule @Heidenheim (4th) Sandhausen (11th) Heidenheim's remaining schedule Hamburg (3rd) @Arminia Bielefeld (1st) It's going to be very, very close. - Stuttgart cannot clinch this weekend but the best results would be Heidenheim to win over HSV along with a Stuttgart win over Nurnberg. That would not clinch but it would eliminate HSV from the 2nd spot. The only way Stuttgart would not get promoted on the final matchday would be if Stuttgart lost, and Heideinheim won to the point where it would overturn a likely very big GD.
VfB need to win out to get the fans back on Matarazzo's side. Today helps, but won't mean anything if they lose one, or both of the final games. They need to stay in second for the automatic promotion spot.
Huge 6-0 win for Stuttgart over Nurnberg. With Heidenheim downing HSV to move into 3rd place, Stuttgart is essentially promoted (it would take a Stuttgart loss and a Heidenheim win to the point it overcame an 11 goal differential for Stuttgart not to go up) In other words, Matarazzo will become the first American born & raised manager in the the Bundesliga next season. What a big accomplishment
Is it a given he's going up w/ them? He had been up and down lately, so that makes it a question in my mind, and explains a loss of interest in the thread recently. But strong finish, huh?!?! Good for him regardless. As far as leaving one of the biggest stories for Yanks Abroad in the academy section, take it up w/ the mods. This has always been a disputed philosophy by me as well. Marsch certainly has no business being buried.
I really would have preferred not to back-in to the B1. Now let's see if we can stay there for more than a season.
It's a good thing this forum also houses foreign transfer speculation for established USMNT players that have never played abroad, because if I hadn't started digging through this forum to bump the Reggie Cannon thread with news of the latest Bundesliga interest in him, I don't think I would have stumbled onto this thread and learned about arguably the biggest European coaching accomplishment ever from an American born and raised manager. I literally had no idea who Matarazzo was a week ago.
People who rely solely on the YA main forum for their major news related to yanks in football didn't know Bob Bradley was coaching in the Premier League, until he wasn't. Though that period was only about 10 weeks, so they couldn't have went on winter vacation or got intubated for whatever SARS virus was circulating at the time.
The era of COVID has made things a really difficult to predict, but I like Stuttgart's chances of survival. I thought the bottom half of the Bundesliga was really poor this year compared with previous seasons and Stuttgart has more resources than a typical team promoted out of the 2.Bundesliga. Koln, Schalke, Augsburg, Werder/Heidenheim, Union Berlin, Mainz, Arminia Bielefeld. I like Stuttgart's chances in finishing ahead of at least 3 of those teams.
Sven Mislintat says that VfB only have 5M Euros for transfers in. We'll see if that's true or not. If it is, it's staggeringly low, and would seem they're counting on free transfers and some loanees who have been away, such as Erik Thommy. Consider me concerned.
Considering American residents (unless they are EU citizens or residents) can't travel to the EU (for the most part), it's gonna be a limited pool of players to draw from until the pandemic is under control.
Matarazzo and Stuttgart picked up a 1-0 win against 3. Liga Hansa Rostock in the first round of the German Cup today. Stuttgart host Freiburg in Baden-Schwaben-Derby match to start 1. Bundesliga play next Saturday.
Grant Wahl did a great interview with Pellegrino Matarazzo that came out 8/23/20. I know it's a little late but, I didn't see any mention of it and it is pretty fascinating interview, especially since there isn't a ton of information out there about Pellegrino. NEW POD: Stuttgart's US head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo joins me (at 25:34) to tell his story from New Jersey to the Bundesliga. Plus @ChrisWittyngham and I break down the men's UEFA Champions League final.SUBSCRIBEApple https://t.co/A1kX0uYUEgSpotify https://t.co/VCDYuGPWy7 pic.twitter.com/N2Jku8wAn1— Subscribe to GrantWahl.com (@GrantWahl) August 24, 2020
dont tell taylor twellman that other people besides him have been talking about pellegrino. wouldnt want to interrupt his cringeworthy self congratulatory victory lap for interviewing him.
I am not mentioning any names... but someone interviewed Pellegrino in both March 2020 and in September 2012
I am just happy more people are interviewing and speaking with Pellegrino. In the end of the day, there should be lots of American journalists doing pieces on him. I am happy Twellman did a segment on him.
