I think it should have to be an extremely obvious error by the officials to override a missed call on the field. Do it like hockey. After the play is over, make a judgment as to what the on the field call is, and let the referee decide if they made a serious error that affected the outcome of the play.

EDIT: Actually, hockey has the same problem with the offside rule, and it often gets more extreme than today's example. It's a 100% black and white decision, and there can be tons of passes made after the offside zone entry that get completely nullified. It can be upwards of 45 seconds to a minute of play in some cases.

I guess what I'm saying is, offside in both soccer an hockey has an extremely outsized affect on the game. Attacking play is entirely structured around avoiding being called for it, and edge cases like Offor today, and a ton of plays in hockey every season shouldn't be ruled on by VAR.

That said, it's not that difficult to avoid being way offside. It feels like it doesn't even occur to our players that they might not be onside.

The one positive comment I can say about the Fire was their possession % during the game. Here are the negative ones.
1 Did the Fire set a personal record for offside?
2 The offense only needs a messi at central mid who can make that last great pass and a Ronaldo to shoot.
3 Offor cannot control the ball.
4 We cannot shoot on goal especially always heading the ball over the net. The one header goal was nice but of course offfor was offside earlier.
5 I don't want to hear comments from the fire that they don't desperately need offensive help.
6 The defense was good except for leaving Montreal's striker wide open in front of the net.

I haven’t figured out how to use my season tickets yet so they’ve gone to waste the last two games. Watched the first 30 minutes at home but then had to take care of some yard work.

Seeing Mihailovic pull up lame on the sidelines and then just walk back on the field and then fall down in pain in front of Shuttleworth to kill the play was just pathetic! Total bush league. Happy that Shuttleworth gave him an earful as did Sector Latino. What a complete ass. Glad that he is a Fire Reject!

  9. He shot near post instead of far post. That was his goal.

  10. That's a metaphor for Fire fandom the last dozen years.

It hurt way less than being a Fire fan.

There wasn't really space to shoot far post. Too many players in the way. That chance was actually more difficult than it initially looked. I think he needed to shoot high near post.

He rolled it to goal. Wasn’t a good shot regardless. Live and learn. No pitchforks.

4 goals scored in 7 games. Worst offense in the league. At least we got that going for us.

We weren't exactly scoring a ton of goals last year, but the players who were scoring (Beric and Herbers) have not been scoring this year. If not for Luka . . .

Herbers? He managed to score 4 goals last season, in 21 games. Sad that was good enough to be considered "who were scoring."

I thought VAR would be a good idea, but I changed my mind and don’t like it. I can’t have a genuine reaction to anything any more and end up always having to wait for VAR before I celebrate. It takes some joy out of the game.

Soccer was always so perfect when the ref was considered a player on the field and their flubs no different than a missed sitter. I completely agree with you but imagine VAR is here to stay because of gambling.

On the plus side, the team did a fine job of fulfilling my original prophecy in this thread and they were very thorough in their mission to "crush spirits and souls."

    It's a burden of a gift. . .

Whoever decided to hire Tony Meola should be fired immediately. This man calls ********ing headers "head balls". They are called headers, Tony.
