The outlook really changed for NYCFC in a period of a few minutes, from 2-0 to no goal to a red card.
I gotta think the automatic card for a handball in the box has to be changed. Chanot wasn't trying to gain an advantage - he got one, which is why they penalty was given. But then the yellow -> red and suspension for the next game is too much.
I agree with this. We've already gotten rid of the triple punishment for other offenses, because intent matters and we don't want to over-punish. Sending someone off for a complete accident isn't necessary.
Agreed 100%. The pk was enough. There was nothing overt about what Chanot did, though it was a legit pk because of the result of the play. The fans went crazy for the pk. I keep hearing no one cares about MLS. Funny, eh?
Tough night for PRO in NY, but typical PRO. Horrendous red card. Hopefully this league starts to aggressively recruit top level officials from the rest of the world. It's tough to take this league seriously when you almost consistently expect a buffoon running around with a whistle. What is the average salary of a full-time PRO ref? Is it enough to poach some competent bodies from South America and Europe? Of course, by PRO standards, the referee had a decent performance relative to what we typically see in MLS. It's just irritating when it's you team losing points to the referee.
Elfath is an excellent referee. I couldn't watch the game because I'm blacked out but I'll make sure to watch the guys review it on Extra Time tomorrow.
Which red card? I disagree with the rule that saw Chanot sent off, but that's the fault of the rule, not of the referee.
@FoxBoro 143 I think you're right. I can see what the referee saw, from his position it looks like the injury was caused by the studs running down the back of the player's calf but on review it was the knee in the back of the knee that caused the injury and the studs didn't make contact. VAR should have overturned it. 4:46 in
There's a big gap in quality officials in USSF. With the rapid expansions of USL and MLS, there just simply is not enough experienced officials for all of the games. The officials that PRO does have are being overworked, which is leading to more inconsistency. As for "poaching" officials from other leagues outside of the US? The referees have a Union. I may be remembering this wrong, but the hiring of Alan Kelly did not sit well with the Referees Union all of the years ago.... It's not a simple matter. That said, there are refereeing issues in most leagues across the globe. Fans of the EPL piss and moan every week about the officiating. Out of all of the the Euro leagues, the Bundesliga probably has the most consistent officiating.
Divergent opinions about the usage of VAR abound from place to place too. Last year, it was reported that English fans hated VAR because it was being used too much in EPL games. Italian fans were miffed because they thought VAR wasn't used enough in Serie A. As for MLS officiating, I think it's OK overall. Like players, referees can have a 'clunker' performance once in a while too. You hate to see it when it happens, especially if it's your team that's negatively impacted, but like so much in sports, it's a part of the game.
English fans hate VAR because of the v abuse of the "clear and obvious" rule. If the ref can't see it on the monitor without lines is not clear and obvious. MLS has its right.
Yeah the PK was tough, rules are rules and the correct interpretation of the handball rule generates constant debate. It was the red card on Parks that was awful.
There's been a trend the last few weeks globally to crack down on this type of tackle. It's a tackle from behind that results in the weight of the defenders body going into the plant leg on the attacker. It can easily cause a dislocated ankle as we saw with Harvey Elliot. It resulted in KDB having an ankle injury in the Euros. I love this red card and I hope we continue to see it given. It's a tackle that is more likely to seriously hurt someone then studs to the lower shin. This is the full body weight of a pro athlete onto the ankle of someone while tackling from behind. This needs to be a red card and I love seeing the trend of cracking down on this. This is not a fair challenge and it's something that has been allowed back into the game over the last decade or so.
