In case anyone was wondering about Paul Kolovos, he signed a youth contract at AEK Athens in Greece in October. He had to wait to play because he had to obtain Greek citizenship as foreign players there cannot play for youth teams once they reach a certain age. He has dual U.S.-Greek citizenship now and has played four games with the youth team. No goals yet, but he has a few assists. He has a youth contact as transfer window had closed in October when he did sign. He had had tryouts at Panathinaikos and Akratitos during his current stay in Greece which started circa three months ago. But neither was willing to sign him. I am told by someone who should know that Panathinaikos deemed him too old for their youth team (he is 20). He also could not get into the first team as I was told that they were not signing any 1st team players. So PAO referred him to Akratitos. He could not get in there either as they too were not signing 1st teamers. AEK had spotted him while he was training with Aris Thessalonica last May and June. What is also encouraging is that he is a "number 10" style player. And we could use playmakers in midfield. He has not yet played for the nats at any level. Besides his experience at Clemson and FIU, he had trained with his father's old team in Poland about a year after he was in Italy playing for Napoli's youth team as a 16 year old. He left Napoli as he was homesick. Things seem to be going well with him so far at AEK. I hope that he can get some playing time with the first team in the not too distant future.
Thanks for the update! Keep us posted... I was looking for Paul online the other day, but couldn't find anything recent...
No sweat! Having a father who was a pro player years ago also helps him. He grew up not far from Tarpon Springs where Gus Kartes is from. I hope that Kolovos' stay in Greece is WAY longer and more successful than that of Kartes. The next thing I will do is to try and locate Kartes and see what he is up to.
Found some more information on Paul Kolovos in a magazine apparently published for Greeks living in New Zealand. His background: Raised in Florida, played college ball for Clemson and then FIU. Now with AEK's youth team as a central midfielder after trials with Aris Thessalonica, Panathinaikos, and Akratitos. Finally caught on with AEK after obtaining Greek citizenship. As a youth, joined Napoli but returned home because he was homesick. Also trained with Pogon in Poland, where his father played. His father, Demitrios, played for Pogon, Stal Tochina (Poland) and Karditsa (Greece) before coming to the US in 1979 to join Philadephia of the NASL. Don't know if the dad is an American citizen. http://www.olympicafc.org.nz/documents/Ta Matia Dec 03.pdf
