    Phelan was taken in the first round, No. 10 overall, just behind Toronto's first pick, Julius James from the University of Connecticut. The 23-year-old native of Enfield, Conn., grew up as a fan of the Revolution.

    He practised with Toronto for the first time yesterday at IMG Academies. He has not yet signed a MLS contract, but that is expected to be completed soon now that his unsuccessful trial with the Danish team FC Nordsjaelland is over.

    "I've kind of always wanted to play in Europe," Phelan said yesterday. "I had the opportunity. I thought if I didn't go then, or at least give it a shot, I might never get the opportunity again. So when Toronto drafted me, I couldn't sign right then because I was already committed to that."​
