Panathinaikos FC to play AC Milan in August at Silverdome By GEORGE SIPPLE FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Soccer fans in metro Detroit have more reason to watch the World Cup now. Seventeen players competing in the tournament are expected to be part of an exhibition Aug. 6 at the Silverdome, pitting AC Milan against Panathinaikos FC. Game time is 8 p.m. AC Milan is a powerhouse Italian club that has won seven UEFA Champions League titles and five European Cups. Among the club’s top players are Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato. Ronaldinho is a two-time FIFA world player of the year. Pato was the Italian Serie A young player of the year last year. Panathinaikos FC plays in the Super League Greece and has won 20 Greek championship titles and 17 Greek Cups. The teams have players competing for Brazil, France, Ghana, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy and the United States at the World Cup. Steve Apostolopoulos, director of the sports division of Triple Sports & Entertainment, which operates the Silverdome, said it has been a goal to bring "top-level international soccer back to Metro Detroit." "This game will be a celebration of the revival of the Silverdome as a world-class sports and entertainment venue," Apostolopoulos said in a released statement. Andreas Apostolopoulos, who runs a commercial property firm in Toronto with his three sons, purchased the Silverdome for $583,000 at an auction in November. The Silverdome was the home to the Detroit Express of the now-defunct North American Soccer League in 1979-80 and hosted group-stage matches in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

I was there. Pananthinaikos deserved to win the game. The team is in an excellent form so early in the season (may prove to be a bad thing in the end!). Cisse, Song, Leto and Ninis were superb! A goal that was crearly over the line for Panathinaikos should have counted but the refs decided to mimic the England-Germany refs to not allow it! Cisse had a goal disallowed as offsides (correctly). Cisse's speed and power are superb but tends to screw up in the very final moment. I did not like that Kante dude. After seeing Olympiakos with Makabi I think Panathinaikos will rape them and Olympiakos will be asking for mercy this year That Song dude will fix Panathinaikos traditional defensive lapses. The game went to PK's and Petropoulos was the only one missed with a horrendously taken PK. Seeing all these players of this caliber up close in a stadium that I was in last time back in the 1994 World Cup it was...priceless
