    Re: Panama: Upcoming Friendlies

Karimi is on the roster chosen for this match, but whether he will be available or not is an open question? His agent has said he won't be able to make it.

If Karimi does make it, I don't think Iran is missing that much. We have a strong enough team, even without the European based players and without the players from Perspolis (and some other clubs). In fact, with Karimi, we still would have some problems figuring how to fit all the talent in one team.

I expect something like the following lineup from Iran:

    Mirzapour -
    Kaabi, Nosrati, Kameli, Zare -
    Nekounam, Mobali (Alavi) -
Borhani (Mobali/Majidi), Karimi (Azizi), Nikbakht -
    Daei.

Iran should win 3:0 or 3:1.

even karimi wont come, taht would suck, hes the whole show, wahts up wtih IFF man, horrible planning. the game will be tight, panama almost won usa if u remember, so im taking no underestimations as usual

    1) a tie
    2) iran 2 panam: 1
iraN : 3 panama: 1 or 2-0 something like that, then theres the 30% chance panam wins as well

    Re: Panama: Upcoming Friendlies

December 14, 2004 - Panama National Team left Panama for Iran via Amsterdam and was to arrive on Wednesday morning via KLM airlines. Panama will play the Iranian national team on Saturday, December 18th. Iran and Panama are scheduled to play in the next round of qualifying matches for their respective regions in order to qualify for the World Cup.

At the airport in Panama, the Panama head coach, RosterJosé Eugenio Hernández "Cheché" was asked a series of questions on behalf of IK regarding their upcoming match against Iran and below you find his responses to these questions:

What do you know about the Iranian football and why did you or your federation choose to play them?

I respect Iran because it is one of the most powerful teams in Asia. They are ranked 20 in FIFA and this match will be a very good exam for us.... Iranian football federation invited us to play in Tehran via Panamanian Soccer Federation.

What do you consider of your chances to be one of the 3 teams to qualify directly out of your region? Does the fact that the 4th place of your region has to play agaisnt the 5th palce of Asia a factor in playing Iran?

We are thinking to qualify among the first three teams. We are not thinking about the playoff against the Asian 5th place team, but this match is a good test in case we have to.

Other than the game against Iran, in this trip to Asia will you play any other country?

No, we are going to play only against Iran. Next year we will play two matches against the Denmark U-21 (with some members of the U-23 and the "A" Team), in Panama, and two more games against Ecuador national team in their country.

Here is the Panama roster and their club affiliations for this trip:

    - Jaime Penedo (goalkeeper) - Árabe Unido - 2004 Panama champions
    - Francisco Portillo (goalkeeper) - San Francisco FC
    - Luis Moreno (defender) - Tauro FC
    - Víctor Miranda (defender) - San Francisco FC
    - Carlos Rivera (defender) - Árabe Unido
    - Luis Henríquez (defender) - Árabe Unido
    - Roberto Stewart (defender) - Chorrillo FC
    - Alberto Blanco (midfielder) - Sheriff – in Moldova
    - Julio Medina III (midfielder) - Starting January he will play for Águila - El Salvador
    - Gabriel Gómez (midfielder) - He played last season in Pasto - Colombia. He was also a member of Panama Youth National Team in 2003 Youth World Cup in United Arab Emirates
    - Juan Carlos Cubilla (midfielder) - Tauro FC
    - William Aguilar (midfielder) - Tauro FC
    - Ricardo Phillips (striker) - Tauro FC
    - Luis Tejada (striker) - Tauro FC
    - Víctor René Mendieta Jr. - (striker) - San Francisco FC
    - Orlando Rodríguez (striker). Árabe Unido. He was also a member of Panama Youth National Team in 2003 Youth World Cup in United Arab Emirates.
    - Blas Pérez (stirker) - He played last season with Centauros (Colombia) and was the best scorer with 29 goals.

    Re: Panama: Upcoming Friendlies

Sorry but I have been really busy with work and family. The news that I am about to share is probably known to some of you.

Shasta gave a great overview of Panama but I think that he forgot the man that really makes the offense run right now. ROBERTO BROWN.

I just checked the Panamanian website and it says that the only foriegn player that will be called was Alberto Blanco (Sheriff MOLDAVIA).

    www.marejaroja.com

As it turns out, there will be no Panagol (Jorge Dely Valdez), no Roberto Brown. Jose "Cheche" Hernandez has emphasized that this is a firendly. He wants to check out his depth and get a look at some of his guys who have practiced hard but not played very much during the previous round of the WCQ campaign.

Now the outlook shifts back to Iran. Even if it is fielding a "C" team, it really should win this game. No disrespect to Panama. The travel, the climate, the nerves, etc... It will be surprising if they can get out with a draw, let alone win. I'm not saying that they can't win. I'm just saying that it is highly unlikely.

Big Props to MANI for the most recent info. Job well, well done. I didn't know that "Cheche" had to decided to call Blas Perez and the other details were great.

    Re: Panama: Upcoming Friendlies

It was confirmed today. Newly crowned Asian Player of the Year, the sensational Ali Karimi of Iran, will indeed miss this friendly match due to club commitments.

Although not having our best defender, Serie A's Rahman Rezaie, as well as one of our top strikers (Bayern Munich's Vahid Hashemian), or last year Asian Player of the Year, Hamburg's rocket Mehdi Mahdavikia, will all hurt, ultimately Karimi is the most important player in Iran's current squad.

That said, even those absences don't change much about who should win this game? We still have a good enough roster. Our starting lineup will probably be as follows:

    Mirzapour -
    Kaabi, Nosrati, Kameli, Zare -
    Nekounam, Alavi (Mobali) -
    Borhani, Mobali (Azizi), Nikbakht -
    Daei.

In light of Karimi's absence, however, I will scale down my prediction to a 2:1 win for Iran, although I woudn't be hugely surprised if the inexperienced Panamanians totally lose their concentration and end up getting smacked by 5-6 goals.

BTW, thank yanki boy on the comments regarding Panama's team. I know of Roberto Brown, but my understanding is that he has been injured and that is why he is not going to Iran. The Dely Valdez brothers have also apparently retired, after a spat with Panama's coach.

I think the Panamanian team just flew back home.

I wonder why my Iranian soccer friends act so wimpy about Chicago winters? Never would've known from the way they acted. Thanks for the nice pics.

    Re: Panama: Upcoming Friendlies

    Goal was off a PK.

other notes from the match tracker:

The game is otherwise fairly even and Panama has had its chances as well including one where Panama would have scored if not for slipping on the grass.

Apparently there are only 10,000 fans in the stadium and the temperature is close to freezing.

    The referee is Iranian

    2nd half,

Panama has an early chance to score, but Iran appears to now have taken control of the game.

Pretty even game. Both sides have had their chances. Iran has had a couple that were clearer. Panam'a best clear shot was from the blonde Phillips. Iran's keeper made a fantastic flying save.
