Re: Paging Mr. Howard I thought the same thing. Well here is the chance for Fergie to work him back in. A face saving opportunity.
Re: Paging Mr. Howard An (R) might be appropriate. In any case, IMO that was worse than any Howard gaffe I've seen.
Howard - Manchester United vs Lyon (R) 11/23/04 Howard on the bench. 41st minute, Carroll makes a bad error, can't hold on to the shot that's directly at him and lets it slip into the net. 1-1.
Re: Paging Mr. Howard Just saw it... in fairness, it was a speculative shot from long range that knuckled like crazy. But nonetheless, Carroll should've had it in his mitts. And shouldn't there be an "{R}" on this thread? Would Tim Howard made that save? Maybe, maybe not, we'll never know... but it shows that any 'keeper is capable of making a blunder in a big game.
Re: Paging Mr. Howard To be fair, Carroll has been playing very well. It should take more than one mistake to lose his spot.
That ranks with the worst gk plays I've seen. No deflection, not exactly ripping, from distance. Must have had a wicked bend or something, but how on earth did he not smother that. Combine that with the goal sparta prague gave up tonight, and there's a lot of work for Howard int his champions league.
Tommy Smyth went on to say that maybe Timmy Howard could have stopped that....I was thinking the same thing. A goal due to keeper error. Sorry Carroll.
Re: Howard - Manchester United vs Lyon (R) 11/23/04 IT IS WHAT WE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR , ISN'T IT Carroll is not a bad keeper, but this was a bad error on his part, it happens, it happend to Howard if score remains 1-1 Carroll will get lot of blame, if Man U wins, everyone will forget and forgive
I would hope that most pro keepers make that save. Yes it was knuckling a bit, but he should have been able to keep it out. Do I think Tim makes that save... yes but then I think that 95% of the time so does Roy. While I really want Howard to get back into games, Carroll's been playing well, so I doubt this one mistake will make him sit anytime soon.
I was watching it live, and couldn't help cackling like a one dimensional villian in a chessy hollywood B flick.
I can't say i watched as much Man U as i used to (since Howard is out ) and i admit Carroll is not a bad keeper, but i always Knew he is not as good as Howard. The fact remains that Carroll hasn't had much goalkeeping to do since Rio is back and Heinze is playing regulary. If one thinks back to the assult that Howard used to be facing and to what Carroll has been dealing with its totaly different ball games.
ManU has now witnessed CL blunders by three very talented keepers, in carroll, howard, and barthez. So what does this prove? It's a tough position, everyone makes mistakes, and Howard very likely will get another shot.
I believe most agree but perception is everything and at the time they needed a scapgoat and Howard was it.
The Lyon defense doesn't seem to care tonight do they... Anyway, I hope ManU advances... and Howard can reclaim the starting job for later matches.
Re: Paging Mr. Howard Fair, Be Fair? What is this strange and unfamiliar "Fair" you speak of? I know not any "Fair". Can you eat "Fair"? As a 100% howling homer on this subject I have no concern with being fair. I do however admire it in others, from a distance.
