Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass: “We didn’t choose Michael Cohen to be our witness. We didn’t pick him up at the witness store. The defendant chose Michael Cohen to be his fixer because he was willing to cheat and lie on his behalf.”

    Nice.

My personal fav point of the prosecution is that even if we accept that Cohen is biased, the prosecution also brought up a number of witnesses that were loyal to Trump and, in Pecker’s case, still considered Trump a friend..

Reading that, the "We didn't pick him up at the witness store" part is going to land.

Yup. Reading the WaPo live feed and Bower's X posts, really seem like Steinglass is taking the jury from point to point to point, which saying people are flawed. But Trump likes those people.

Per the great George Carlin, think of how stupid the average person is, then realise 6 jurors are stupider than that. And the defence only needs one.

Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass is getting to the meat of the prosecution’s case: that the alleged attempt to conceal the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels was part of an illegal effort to influence the 2016 election.

Steinglass zeroed in on a 2015 meeting at Trump Tower between Donald Trump, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, and former tabloid publisher David Pecker. Pecker agreed to suppress potentially negative stories about Trump as he embarked on his presidential campaign.

The prosecutor described the meeting as “three rich and powerful men high up in Trump Tower trying to control the flow of information that might reach the voters.”

All three of them, Steinglass said, knew that women would be coming forward with accounts of sexual liaisons with Trump. Pecker, he said, agreed to be the “eyes and ears” of the campaign, using his perch at the time as publisher of the National Enquirer to “catch and kill” their stories and protect Trump’s White House bid.

“It was a subversion of democracy,” Steinglass said, adding that fair elections hinge on voters having access to important information about candidates.

“The purpose of the meeting was to deny that access,” he said, “to pull the wool over their eyes in a coordinated fashion.”

Their alleged scheme, Steinglass said, “could very well be what got President Trump elected.”

Some of the jurors are looking a little restless as prosecutor Joshua Steinglass gets into the weeds on some of the trial exhibits. Some of them are looking around the room occasionally and shifting in their seats.

I think this is good. I think this means the jury already knows the evidence.

    Bower has a different perception

Steinglass continues to support this narrative by showing phone records and text message exhibits that corroborate witness testimony from Pecker, Cohen, and Davidson. Many of the jurors stare intently at the exhibits displayed on the screens in front of them.

I've gotta say, I have not been overly impressed with the WaPo live feed coverage of this trial. At least from point when Daniels testified onward.

    @soccernutter

I think this has already been covered…but what happens if the jury are unanimous on m any of the falsification counts but at least one holds out that they were not done in furtherance of another crime? Can he be convicted as charged for the misdemeanors or this felony or bust?

The furtherance part only elevates the overall to a felony. He would still be guilty on all the misdemeanors, assuming the jury votes guilty on them. To be clear, there are 34 misdemeanors. But he was not indicted for any furtherance charges. Those were included, more or less, to show some conspiracy to commit a felony. There are also 3 furtherances the jury are allowed to consider (I forget what they are).

Assistant District Attorney Joshua Steinglass has spent the past 20 minutes or so meticulously walking jurors through text messages involving negotiations to buy the silence of a former Playboy model who claimed she had sex with Donald Trump. This is all designed to show a coordinated effort to protect Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. Lots of phone records and text-heavy exhibits — it’s dense.

This is a documentation case, after all. Not like Florida, but lots of documentation nonetheless.

Donald Trump crossed his arms after prosecutors played the tape of him telling Michael Cohen to pay cash.

And there it is. If the jury knows the signs, that is the indication that Trump knows he cooked.

    Jury is out on break.

    Posting Bower's X here: https://x.com/AnnaBower

If you have the time after closing is done, or after the jury is sent home/to deliberation today, which ever is latter, take a time to read it (or anybody else who has been live tweeting). Particularly the Steinglass closing. He is really hammering this home, person after person, point after point.

Steinglass is about 2 hours in, and about 1/3 of the way through. Looks like this is going until Wednesday.

And I'm out. I've got stuff to do this afternoon that forces me to go outside. ;)
