Start Fagundez. If we need a goal you bring on Reus. Can’t rely on Reus if he is not fully fit.

FWIW NYRB’s reg season record is 4-6-7 on the road. So only 4 regulation wins out of 17 games. OTOH they are 3-0-1 on the road in the playoffs, and against some very good competition. The explanation is simple - they have only allowed 2 goals total in those 4 games. That is some stout defense!

Silver lining, Red Bull apparently has been playing with a full court press. Riqui has been shown to be quite vulnerable to that. As ultra dynamic as he makes our attack, I think stability and consistency, especially in the face of a full court press is what will win this game.

I looked it up and you are correct. Marco and Borussia Dortmund finished as runners-up to Bayern Munich 7 times (!!!) in his time there. But never won the Bundesliga. So we need to win this for Riqui, and Maya, and Reus!

My money is on Reus starting and Diego or Delgado as super sub. Because Vanney is likely thinking the same thing you 2 are thinking. Reus is old and slow and is better out the gate than when you are needing people to come in and turn the game by running super hard to get a goal or defend a lead.

Doyle with a great stat on what Garces has meant to our defense:

"It also needs to be said that this defense is at a different level since Emiro Garcés became the full-time starter with four games to go in the regular season. Since then (including playoffs), the Galaxy have allowed just 1.05 npxG per 90, which is a top-five mark in the league. Before Garcés won the job they were allowing 1.46 npxG per 90, which was 21st."

Also, I looked into those 5 games we played without Riqui - we went 3-1-1, but the loss and the tie were also when we were missing Dejan as well. When we played Dejan, the two Ps, and Fagundez, we won all 3 matches and averaged 2.3 goals/game in those 3 games. And in probably the most impressive of those matches, the 2-0 win at home against NYCFC, the front 6 was the exact lineup we will have this Saturday if Reus starts on the bench:

    --Paintsil----Dejan-------Pec
    ---Fagundez-------Delgado
    -------------Cerrillo

Someone needs to translate this into the 3-4 languages spoken on the Galaxy roster and post each of them on the bulletin board

Yup. Vanney and coaching staff should be prepping the team for ways to effectively work the refs because it's clear we are the more talented team and RBNY's game plan is gonna be to try to make the game ugly and physical.

On the one hand, Reus said he's "really confident that I will be there" and the other hand he is "not sure" if he'll be fit and available. If he's trying to keep the Red Bulls guessing, he did a good job

Vanny will not over think it as usual and stick with what worked. He'll start Reus, guys, and it's ok i would say. Keeps you more flexible if you'll need to change the game later with subs.

I just now woke up from a nap where I had an MLS Cup dream:

I went to a sports bar to watch the game with other Galaxy fans. For some reason I sat by myself in the back in a booth. At the beginning of the game I was tired and struggling to keep my eyes open. Fell asleep and didn't wake up until I heard yelling -- we had just scored to take a 2-1 lead in the final minute of regulation! But all I could feel was anger at myself and disappointment that I had slept through the whole game! A game I had waited 10 years for! Grrrr!

Does this mean I need therapy?

Wow - RBs opened their pocketbooks for even their role players. Very interesting. A battle between a top-heavy budget approach (paying a lot for a couple stars) vs. a more evenly distributed payroll.

Makes sense that our team would be about offense (goal scorers are expensive!) and theirs more oriented around defense.

PS - I thought we got Reus really cheaply? Thought that was the whole point.

Interesting clarification from the source of the data itself:

contract status does come into play for the "valuations" used here.

I think this is current transfer value. Not what the team paid, or what they can sell for.
