So, don't know if anyone else has mentioned this - but the atmosphere at the Diggs yesterday (and all playoffs but especially for the cup) was amazing. I've been to 4 prior MLS Cups at the stadium - 2003 I don't really need to mention. It sucked for so many reasons. But I was also there for the 2011, 2012 and 2014 MLS Cup wins, and none of them come close to the intensity and noise from the crowd last night. And I don't think it was so much different people attending the game compared to those prior years - I think it was those people have now spent more years with the club and have been through more ups and downs and really appreciated the magic they got to experience - it was organic and not manufactured like LAFC. It was really the next phase of MLS experiences with a team with almost 30 years of history winning a cup -- you had multiple generations of Galaxy fans in attendance, willing their team on to victory. Something that really only MLS 1.0 teams can offer right now. Down the line, we will see 2.0 and 3.0 teams reach this - but I feel like maybe the Galaxy are the first to gain this new multi-generational MLS Cup experience. I mean, the Galaxy won their first MLS Cup a couple months before my younger daughter was born, and last week, while visiting us for Thanksgiving, she was sitting next to me in the stadium, cheering Dejan's winning goal in the Western Conference final. I hope many more fans of the Galaxy (and MLS) get to experience games like this. But I hope the Galaxy fans get to experience them more often....
I attend 10-15 games a season, so that means over 100 games of in-person mediocrity since the last title. No matter what, I still love to see the sport live and share it with friends. The last ten years have been a wild ride. **The post-2014 seasons that still had the cup haze with Gerrard and Dos Dos Santos, but we flamed out in the playoffs. **The absolute sh_tshow of the 2017 Onalfo team. **The Zlatan Experience – which I dug but ended without success. **The weird GBS/Pavon/Covid seasons. Attending a game with most of the seats roped off was wild. **The Chicharito years, which were frustrating, even with Riqui trying to pull the team along. **Then, finally, the Epic 2024 Season. I’m so happy for the team, organization, our fans, and all the awesome, loyal, knowledgeable folks on this board. I was smiling all day yesterday. Still am today! G’s Up!
Doyle is already downplaying the Galaxy, ranking them 5th among contenders for the 2025 MLS Cup. Of course, he's got some reasons for it that aren't wrong, but he seems pretty eager to double down on being wrong about the Galaxy https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/mls-cup-2025-top-5-way-early-contenders
You could hear it. I’d been to the three previous ones, and those were crazy loud, but this was different. There was so much in this one, like you said: generations of fans (we had at least two players who attended games at Dignity on the pitch last night. I remember having conversations on this board about how third-generation Galaxy games were going to be special - maybe last night will be seen as the beginning of that era). Also, I think you have the supporters groups. They’ve not only grown but put their money where their mouths were last season and forced some changes. There was some skin in the game yesterday.
Yesterday, I brought my son who was 11 when he attended his last MLS cup. I talked to fans who were immature young adults last go around and were now attending with their kids. And there were plenty of OGs who’d been rooting since 1996. But this cup had lifers who’ve grown up on the Galaxy. It showed. Great atmosphere for the team but still family friendly. Appropriate for this year’s Galaxy.
My apologies for being late to this thread. My Saturday commitments preclude me from being able to watch the match live, but I was able to watch the replay. There's lots to say about the performances that were shown by our boys out there, but I want to say this about the goal that Dejan scored. Dejan used his left foot while running to his left and struck the ball to his right side, but even more slick was that he managed to put his boot on the ball in between the 1-2 running rhythm, or 'off-step' as some might say, which is tough to do. This irregular type of strike was a 'flash' moment, one that the GK couldn't react to, proven by the fact that all he could do was helplessly watch the ball roll into the corner of his goal.. ...and Dejan did this while surrounded by three defenders.
Great comments. Also the behind the goal angle replay is epic and will age well I think—Dejan falling down all the while focusing intently on the ball (looking right towards the camera) waiting to see … watching it all the way as it rolls into the corner.
Another thing I haven't seen anyone really comment on - that first goal was after we recycled our attack from the middle to the right, then back to the middle. Every Galaxy field player had a touch before the goal except for Nelson. It starts with Delgado making a sloppy giveaway in the middle and then hustling to block a Red Bull player's pass, resulting in an immediate turnover back to the Galaxy. The passes are Delgado-Dejan-Delgado-Pec-Delgado-Yamane-Garces-Yoshida-Brugman-Garces-Yoshida-Brugman-Cerrillo-(quick key pass that springs Brugman into space)-Brugman-Paintsil I think it's a great example of what Vanney talks about when he says he wants the team to be patient and not rush, but to move quickly and vertically when the space opens up. I know we give Vanney a lot of stick, but that first goal was like a textbook example of what he was preaching all season....
