Well well well, what do you know? We are hosting MLS Cup, 10 years to the day since our last appearance at MLS Cup. We will be heavy favorites, although attention all week long will be focused on Riqui's knee and if he is able to go or not.... I hope we win this for the fans. And the support staff. And all the long-time diehards. And the cool kids on BS. But most of all, I want us to win it for Maya Yoshida - the classiest captain you could ever ask for, who has accomplished so much in his storied career but has never won a club championship. So, if I may quote a very wise man from last night's Western Conference trophy presentation -- "One more win." for Maya. And here is a little flashback to Dec 7, 2014 for inspiration:
Raise your hands if you honestly thought you'd be here at the beginning of the season. Let alone during our 10 game review "guess" not me
I predicted we would be the 2nd best team in the league (thought Miami w Messi would be best) but even I wouldn’t have bet on us making the Final. Well, not an even bet. Too many things can go wrong to expect to be here.
That’s the reasoning part of your brain. I can tell you that logically I thought we’d have a chance to be a surprise team, but MLS cup was not in the cards; however, I can tell you honestly that EVERY year some part of me thinks, “this could be the year we go undefeated and win it all!”. I don’t let that part of me manage the family finances or operate heavy machinery, or anything like that, but it exists there inside, nonetheless—I wager it might be there lurking within most here on the forum.
A Spanish source is claiming Riqui has torn his ACL. I really really hope its just rumor mongering. As per Sport, former #FCBarcelona midfielder Riqui Puig has torn his ACL. #LAGalaxy pic.twitter.com/NuPr3x1OLn— Football España (@footballespana_) December 1, 2024
Don’t know how reliable that is, but if confirmed, that would be horrible. He has been such an integral part of this team, and it feels awful going into this game without him.
Sadly, that was my fear when I saw him crying. The realization that he probably tore it would explain his strong emotional reaction. Hope this isn’t the case though.
The odd thing about the report is that I saw the trainer perform what looked like an ACL check on him when he went to the sidelines to get checked out while Rusnak was down. If it had looked problematic, they wouldn’t have let him stay out there. Perhaps it happened later or it got worse by continuing to play on it. It’s also possible it was confirmed as likely and he insisted on staying out there to finish the game.
Legendary to tear an acl and play on it for 30 minutes and provide the game winning assist…if true. Win it for Riqui!
Yes, epic if Riqui had the game winning assist while playing on one leg. He will be a huge loss but hopefully that provides extra motivation. Win it for Riqui and Maya!!! (And TrickHog)
And if Riqui is out, the next question becomes is Reus available to go, as he is also struggling with some sort of injury. If both can't go then our depth really gets tested. Is this the chance for Fagundez to step up into a starting role and save the day?
Midfielder @RiquiPuig has sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. Puig sustained the injury in the second half of the match, continuing to play over thirty minutes despite his injury, and providing the game-winning assist on Dejan Joveljić’s 85th… pic.twitter.com/roTZASvPZ3— LA Galaxy (@LAGalaxy) December 2, 2024 so sad. we can still win this though.
Confirmed. https://www.lagalaxy.com/news/la-galaxy-midfielder-riqui-puig-suffers-torn-acl Gutted for him. But what a warrior - playing 30 minutes and dishing up the game winning assist on one knee.
Ughhh. Sucks all around. Just brutal. I think you have to put Fagundez in the middle. Reus looked slow last night.
Fagundez most likely and hope Reus can provide minutes. other idea is add Brugman in a more forward central midfield roll with Marky and Cerillo. I dunno.
Yeah - I'd say Fagundez to start. Need Brugman available off the bench as the backup for Delgado and Cerillo.
Without Riqui Puig this year, LA Galaxy went 3W-1D-1L. 0-0 D v Seattle4-2 W v SKC2-0 W v NYCFC1-0 W v SJ2-1 L v STLFagúndez started in 4/5 of those matches, he scored in 1.Delgado also started in 3/5 of those matches.#LAGalaxy | #MLS— Caleb Pongratz (@CalebPongratz10) December 2, 2024 history suggests fagundez is the starter.
Okay - Trick Hog said win it for Maya. Maybe just because he’s captain. I got worried. Man also realize that Riqui gonna miss most of next season too. This sucks. SUCKS. Glad we have Diego.
