When the PA guy says here are 'YOUR New England Revolution' I think....they sure as hell ain't mine. My team left with Arena and has been nowhere to be seen since.
When they lost to St. Louis 2-2, I sensed the season was over. Before that, Porter said that all they had to do was to win their home games and pick up some points on the road... But if they don't get the full 3 tonight, they'll have virtually no chance at making the playoffs. They really would need to clinch a spot with 2 games to go, since they are away to Columbus and Miami, and I can't realistically see them getting points from either.
If they can't win at home against a team they beat 5-0 on the road a few weeks ago, Porter should be fired on the spot.
I honestly think they're done. The 2 most recent road losses were both terrible - mainly for the way that they lost. Yes they were games where you want/need results, but they weren't competitive in either match and you got the impression that once they fell behind, the players said 'screw it'. I thought they quit in both matches.
The expectations this season were for the revs to compete for trophies. Not win them, but be competitive in them. Failure to even qualify for the competitors trophies are fought for should be grounds for replacement
I'm done. Get him out of here. "All we have to do is win our home games", and they can't even do that. And take MAK with him. One play in particular last night just infuriated me. A sideways pass to Kaye was a bit in front of him, but with a little hustle he easily could have gotten to it. Instead, he jogs back to a defensive position and lets the Montreal player have the ball. The Revs are paying $750K for that???? The one positive: I was convinced they would give up yet another stoppage time goal and lose the game, but they didn't....
Strangely, the media got this one right this year. I think we were much more positive than the rest of MLS about this team.
I thought it was a very entertaining game, with the 2nd half lull biting them in the butt ... again. Overall, I think they've assembled some very good talent, but they are much less than the sum of their parts. At this point, I think Porter needs a full training camp with this roster, because they have assembled it on the fly and haven't built the needed chemistry. Specifically to last night, MAK was a disaster - they should have brought in Yussuf sooner, or even started him and see how long he could go. Or, play Harkes - who, even in a busy week, hasn't played that much over the season that he couldn't go. I thought we were excellent all night on the left side - and that's pretty encouraging because it's our two youngest guys - Esmir and Peyton. The right side was crying for quality crosses, but never got them because Lima is just very limited offensively. As for the back line, I find it really weird that Porter seemed to have no use for Romney earlier in the season, but now won't play Parker because he seems to see Romney as indispensible.
Up 2 nil at home and give up two in the second half should never happen. 1 minute after making the first sub montreal ties it up.. pathetic
Agreed, Miller and Esmir were two bright spots (side note: on the broadcast, the commentators were joking about Miller's "one yard pass for an assist"). It was good to see Carles back to being himself also. Porter rested Romney, which ended his ironman streak. I think Romney wasn't happy about it, and got in the doghouse for a while, but worked his way out of it. Arreaga is clearly Porter's #1, and it seems Kessler and Romney were battling back and forth for #2. Parker is free agent in December, so if he is not in the long term plans, it makes sense he is #3. Plus, Arreaga and Romney started the shutout in Montreal, so it made sense to go with them again. With 3 games in 8 days, I wouldn't be surprised to see Parker rotated in vs Charlotte.
Yeah, 4 dropped points from the last 2 home games, both of which we had the lead in the 2nd half... yes, we're toast.
Any plan to give Porter an offseason to form chemistry means we can write off the 2025 season along with this one.
I don't know what happened on the play where they tied it. Was it a miscommunication? Yussuf looked good to me after that though. Looks like he can both defend and jump into the attack. Start him, get rid of Kaye. Trade Polster and fill in with Harkes and/or somone they bring in and I think this team shores up a weak spot next season.
Okay, I'll be cautiously optimistic. VERY cautiously. I think he has earned a tremendous amount of doubt so far.
I do think the roster construction has significantly improved (and looks good IMO) since Porter came on board. This actually highlights how incompetent Onalfo and staff were in the window between Arena and Porter. Onalfo may be able to get deals done, but in terms of identifying needs and solutions he's been a disaster. As for Porter, it's pretty well-known that he's a hard-ass and kind of a dick, but, he's our h-a and dick. So, I don't really care whether players or opponents or the league hate him or not, I only care whether he can get them to perform. And, it seems like some players perform for him (or in spite of him) and others don't - so he might as well get the guys he wants/rates. I think he's a very different kind of motivator and coach than Arena, which may be why it unfortunately is taking a massive roster turnover. And, doubling back to Onalfo's incompetence, I think it's abundantly clear that by dithering into December to hire a coach, Revs management basically sacrificed a 2nd season to the Arena implosion.
I will say, a manager that blames performance on "mentality issues" as though that excuses him from poor performance should be sacked. A manager's job is to prepare the players to play (and to make intelligent adjustments mid game) and that starts with mentality. Its yet another instance of Porter blaming others for things that are his job
